UMD MOWS DOWN MINNESOTA CROOKSTON TO CAP OFF 2017 HOME SCHEDULE

The University of Minnesota Duluth has never lost a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division game at James S. Malosky Stadium and the Bulldogs certainly weren't about to start on Senior Day.

The Bulldogs closed out the home portion of its 2017 home schedule Saturday afternoon by overwhelming the University Minnesota Crookston 54-6 to capture at least a share of its 10th straight NSIC North Division title and improve its all time NSIC North Division record to a perfect 34-0

UMD, which extended its winning streak to seven games and improved to 8-2 on the year, led just 8-0 at the first quarter break before busting loose for 19 points in the second quarter and 21 more in the third. The Bulldogs had shut out their opponents for over 16-plus consecutive quarters before the Golden Eagles snapped that run with a 69-yard fumble recovery by Trevor Long with 7:38 to go in regulation.

UMD rolled up 518 yards of total offense, 313 of which was generated by redshirt freshman quarterback John Larson. Larson completed 17 of 23 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns (all career highs) and rushed for another 60 yards and one score before calling it a day late in the third quarter. Redshirt freshman wide out Johnny McCormick had a game-high seven receptions while junior wide out Jason Balts caught five passes for 132 yards and a pair of scores. The first of those came on Larson's first throwing attempt of the afternoon -- an 81-yard strike late in the opening quarter.

Senior linebacker Zach Bassuener and sophomore cornerback Bishop McDonald led the Bulldogs defensively with five total tackles each and combined on 2.0 of the team's 10 stops that went for negative yards. UMD held the Golden Eagles (0-10 overall) to just 149 yards ot total offense, including only 37 on the ground, and for the second straight week held the ball for at least 24 minutes in the 30-minute second half. Junior linebacker Alex Helmer had one of the three Bulldogs interceptions, a third-quarter pick which he returned 11 yards for a touchdown. Like Helmer, free safety Kale Boomer also registered his first collegiate pick as he and 17 other Bulldog seniors bid Malosky Stadium a fond farewell.

"We owe a lot to the seniors and we knew they'd play like they did today," said Curt Wiese, who was in his first year at the UMD head coaching helm when this current senior class joined the Bulldog program. "We've got to tip our hat to them, they've been a great group. They've been through a lot over the past five years, but this year they've certainly held this football team together and helped us get better each week.
"

The Bulldogs will close out the 2017 regular season next Saturday at the University of Mary.
