The University of Minnesota Duluth completed its Florida trip on Friday evening on a successful note, defeating both Saint Anselm College and Southern New Hampshire University to conclude the week with an 8-2 record. UMD used impressive pitching performances to shut down the Hawks 8-3 before blanking the Penmen 5-0.
In the opener, Saint Anselm struck first with a sacrifice fly to center field to take a 1-0 lead. Just an inning later, the Bulldogs would go on an offensive barrage -- driving in sixi runs on seven hits to take a 6-1 lead. Both teams would add two more runs as UMD overpowered SAC, 8-3. Sophomore right fielder
Sammi Sadler paced all batters with three hits and RBIs, both career-highs. Sophomore pitcher
Valerie Hohol picked up her second win of the season with a complete game performance for the Bulldogs. Hohol held SAC to three runs on nine hits.
UMD returned to action in Clermont, Fla. to face Southern New Hampshire, with senior pitcher
Sam Hartmann getting the start. Hartmann was dominant throughout, shutting out the Penmen for her third shutout in five games. Sadler continued on her successful afternoon, knocking an RBI double in the second inning to give the Bulldogs all the run support they needed. Sophomore catcher
Hannah Bloch tacked on another run on a squeeze play for an RBI single.
UMD would get the remainder of its scoring in the top-half of the seventh inning, when junior infielder
Becky Smith laced a double with the bases loaded to drive home three runs and put the Bulldogs comfortably on top, 5-0. A 1-2-3 bottom-half of the inning by Hartmann secured the victory, moving UMD's overall record to 11-7 on the season.
The Bulldogs will have a week off to prepare for the Apple Market Tournament in St. Joseph's, MO. UMD's first match-up will come against a familiar foe, the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. UMD beat UNK, 8-0 in just five innings, to open the 2017 campaign.
