MINNESOTA STATE TOPS UMD IN PITCHING SHOWCASE

It was all about the pitching on Friday evening at U.S. Bank Stadium, as both teams consistently mowed down opposing hitters all night. The University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State University Mankato combined for just four runs in two games, with the Mavericks grabbing a 1-0 shutout win in the opener before winning the rematch 2-1.

MSU 1, UMD 0

Junior left-hander Marcus Frederickson toed the rubber for UMD in game one and was dominant through his five innings of work -- allowing just one hit while shutting out the Mavericks and striking out four. Frederickson was equally matched by Minnesota State's junior Brody Rodning, who pitched seven shutout innings and struck-out seven batters.

The Mavericks tacked on the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior infielder Luke Waldek laced an opposite-field double down the right field line off of freshman Evan Vick. Senior Colton Sinning fanned the only batter he faced to finish off the sixth.

Freshman outfielder Drew Stewart was responsible for two of the three hits by the Bulldogs, picking up singles in the third and fifth innings. Junior outfielder Brett Milazzo grabbed the other hit for UMD with a single in a 1-for-3 performance.

MSU 2, UMD 1

Minnesota State struck first in the rematch, scoring a run in the third inning on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Jordan Hart. The Bulldogs threatened with runners in scoring position twice in the opening four innings, but were unable to string together another hit to get on the board.

UMD tacked on its first run of the day to tie the game at one when sophomore first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in senior right fielder Grant Farley in the sixth inning. Farley had reached base after lacing an opposite-field double off of the baggy in right center field for his first hit of the game.

The Mavericks responded with a run of their own in the bottom-half of the sixth with a double down the left field line, taking a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs threatened in the eight inning with a pair of hits from freshman Chase Thomas and Milazzo, but were ultimately held scoreless in the final two innings for a one-run Minnesota State victory.

Freshman southpaw Rece Dietrich got the start for UMD, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing two runs. Junior Alex Ferguson completed the remaining 1.2 innings with no runs and one hit allowed. For the Mavericks, junior Dalton Roach hurled all nine innings and struck out 12 batters.

Senior catcher Marco Lucarelli posted a 2-for-4 performance, while four other UMD players grabbed a hit apiece to combined for six team hits. The Mavericks knocked around seven hits, led by Waldek with two.

The Bulldogs will square off against Minnesota State for two more games on Sunday afternoon in Mankato.
