As was the case in Friday's games, Minnesota State University Mankato used an impressive pitching staff to shut down the University of Minnesota Duluth en route to a pair of victories. The Bulldogs move to 8-12 (3-5 NSIC) on the season, while the Mavericks improve to 13-4 (8-0 NSIC).
MSU 3, UMD 1
Junior pitcher
Nick Dorfman started game one for UMD, completing five innings while allowing three runs on five hits. For MSU, it was junior Nate Belzer who tossed the third straight complete game against the Bulldogs, pitching seven innings while giving up one run and striking out 11 batters.
UMD picked up its only run of the game in the fourth inning when junior
Colin Baumgard lined a double to left center field to drive in senior right fielder
Matt Vogt to even the score at one. Minnesota State answered an inning later with two runs to take a 3-1 lead - a score that held on the remainder of the game.
Baumgard led all Bulldog hitters with three hits in three at bats, while four other players notched a single. Freshman infielder
Chase Thomas, senior catcher
Marco Lucarelli, and sophomore first baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski all posted a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
Aside from Dorfman, freshman
Evan Vick recorded the other three outs for the Bulldogs without allowing a hit.
MSU 10, UMD 3
The Bulldogs took the field for game two and quickly grabbed a lead, scoring one run in the second inning before adding two more in the third. Freshman outfielder
Drew Stewart was responsible for a solo home run in the second, before Lucarelli added a two-run home run of his own to put the visitors ahead 3-0.
The Mavericks used timely hitting and costly UMD mistakes to combine for seven runs in the third and fourth inning. MSU scored two runs in the third before using three Bulldog errors to notch a five-run fourth inning.
The Mavericks would tack on three more runs in the seventh inning, leading to a 10-3 final score. UMD committed six errors in the game.
Senior southpaw
Kevin Stocke completed the first four innings, but due to defensive mistakes allowed seven unearned runs. Freshmen
Travis Berg,
Kole Zuidmulder, and
Jaylen Hakes completed the final four innings for the Bulldogs with three runs allowed.
Stewart was 2-for-4 at the plate, while junior
Tyler Midas picked up a double in four at bats. Sophomore infielder
