Facing the prospect of snow and cold temperatures at Bulldog Park, the University of Minnesota Duluth took its show on the road to Brainerd, Minn., for a "home" Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Minot State University Sunday. The Bulldogs, who toppled the Beavers twice the previous day in Duluth, got off to a rocky start by falling 11-2 in the opener before bouncing back with an 11-4 triumph.
UMD (20-19 overall; 15-12 NSIC) gave up four runs in the top off the first and spotted the Beavers (22-16 overall, 17-13 NSIC) a 11-0 lead before finally getting on the board in the bottom of the sixth. UMD mustered just four hits -- singles by junior centerfielder
Brett Milazzo, rookie catcher
Reid Rubio, first baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski and freshman first baseman
Jaylen Hakes -- while allowing 11 (including 10 singles and a double). Junior
Nick Dorfman (3-2) took the pitching loss after surrendering eight runs -- seven of which were earned - and eight hits in the opening four innings. (3-2).
Senior southpaw
Kevin Stocke got the start in the rematch and improved to 2-3 on the year after pitching 7 1/3 innings of five-hit, four-run ball. He got all the run support he would need in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bulldogs erased a 3-1 deficit by scoring six times, taking advantage of four hits, including a three-run homer by junior first baseman
Tyler Midas. Midas also launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning and wound up going 2-for-4 with six RBI. Milazzo contributed a pair of singles to UMD's eight-hit attack.
The Bulldogs will pay a visit to Winona, Minn., this Wednesday (April 26) for a pair of NSIC bouts with Winona State University.
