UMD SMOTHERS DRAGONS FOR WEEKEND SWEEP

It was a clinical performance put forth by the University of Minnesota Duluth in the 2-0 shut out over Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Bulldogs dominated play on both sides of the pitch Sunday afternoon at Malosky Stadium to cap off the weekend with six points in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

UMD (5-6-1; 4-4-1 NSIC) blasted a total of 24 shots on the afternoon while MSU Moorhead (2-89; 2-7 NSIC) attempted a grand total of three. Junior midfielder Nan Glinsek and senior forward Natalie St. Martin each netted goals for the Bulldogs. Glinsek booted in her third goal of the season and second in as many games. Glinsek fought off a defender to get to the throw-in from senior defender Lizzy Fontes and propelled her shot past the Dragons' goalkeeper Kayleigh Sedlacek. Her goal, the eventual game-winner, put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute. Glinsek has eight points this season, surpassing her six-point total from last season, and has five points in the last two matches.

Senior defender Erika Hjort started the counter-attack goal that doubled the UMD lead. Hjort dribbled a defender out of her shoes and raced uncontested up the middle of the pitch. Hjort chipped it ahead to junior midfielder Emily Hinz. The St. Louis Park, Minn., native found St. Martin splitting the backline and St. Martin hammered it home at the 54:52 mark to make it 2-0.

The UMD offense was buzzing and overwhelming at times for the Dragons. Sedlacek did the best she could to manage the game and keep it close. She made 13 saves on the afternoon and stopped point-blank attempts from sophomore attacker Holly Kaboord, senior forward Destiny Schmitz, freshman defender Megan Vatne and Fontes to name a few.

Senior goalkeeper Sisley Ng earned her fourth win of the season. Ng made her only stop of the game when called upon but she paid the price. The Dragons' Maren Soupir and Ng collided in the box on a shot attempt. Ng came out of her goal to contest the attacker and blocked the shot but in the process ended up getting tangled with Soupir and both stayed down. Senior goalkeeper Carlye Wright took over between the pipes as both players walked off the field. Wright played the final 25:51 of the match and didn't see a single shot as the backline thwarted any attempt.

Over the course of the two home matches this weekend, the Bulldogs funneled together a complete effort with a pair of 2-0 decisions while outshooting the Northern State University and Minnesota State a combined 45-6. With the six-point weekend, UMD improved its footing in the NSIC forcing itself into four-way tie for sixth place with six games remaining in the season. Those six NSIC matchups remaining hold a combined record of 22-39-7 (.375) with one team above the .500-mark.

UMD, which has won three of the last four, will look to build off its best weekend with a road game against Winona State University Friday at 7:00 p.m.
