BULLDOGS TAKE DOWN HUSKIES 53-42 IN CONFERENCE OPENER

The University of Minnesota Duluth had three players in double figures and went on a 34-7 run over a 15 minute stretch to secure the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener 53-42 over St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the season while the Huskies drop to 3-2.

Senior guard Sammy Kozlowski led all scorers with 13 points. She also chipped in six rebounds, five steals and two assists in UMD's first victory over SCSU since Dec. 12, 2016 in St. Cloud. Freshman Brooke Olson led all reserve players with 11 points and sophomore forward Sarah Grow added 10 points and seven rebounds including five on the offensive end.

The Bulldogs shot 38 percent from the field, just seven percent better than the Huskies but they converted off SCSU turnovers. The Huskies turned the ball over 21 times which UMD capitalized into 23 points. It was an massive improvement from a season ago with the Bulldogs scoring 27 points off 40 turnovers in both meetings.

During the 34-7 run the Bulldogs shot 14-for 24 from the floor including a three from junior forward Katie Stark to give her team their largest lead by 21.

UMD shot 3-for-11 in the opening 10 minutes. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage but fell behind. Olsen hit a corner three to silence the Huskies 9-0 run early but Mackenzie Uter banked in a half court buzzer beater to give SCSU a 15-9 lead at the first quarter break. The Bulldogs didn't let that last second shot deter the second quarter as they outscored the Huskies 18-4 including the final 14 points to take a 27-19 lead into the half. Olsen had a game-high eight points and a team high four rebounds at the midway mark. UMD shot 50 percent in the quarter while the Huskies made two of their seven attempts. The Huskies were held scoreless the final 6:55 of the half.

St. Cloud State trailed by 19 after the third quarter as UMD continued to roll. The Bulldogs scored 22 points in the third off 9-of-15 shooting. Kozlowski led the charge with seven points. St. Cloud attempted a late charge but only cut the deficit to single digits once with 3:44 remaining.

UMD is back in action next Friday night as it takes on Minot State University on the road.
