In a pair of non-conference afternoon bouts, the University of Minnesota Duluth (4-6) lost its third, followed by its fourth in-a-row after losing to Emporia State University 4-3 in game one, and 2-1 in the rematch.
The Hornets, of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, have none won five of their last seven games and move to 12-9 on the season.
Game 1
Despite out-hitting ESU 6-3, UMD came up short in their first of two games on the day. The Bulldogs gave up a quick run in the first inning before tying things up in the third after senior third baseman Colin Baumgard knocked in sophomore left fielder Cory Krolikowski on a fielder's choice. Junior second baseman Eric Yachinich gave UMD the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly that allowed Krolikowski to score after his first triple of the season. The Hornets quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 3-2, and ousted starting pitcher Marcus Frederickson. Frederickson (1-1) worked 4.2 innings striking out four but walking three. Reliever sophomore Evan Vick (L, 0-1) came in for the final 1.1 innings allowing one unearned run to score. That run came in the sixth just after UMD had tied things up 3-3 in the top of the inning.
Krolikowski and senior catcher Tyler Midas each collected a pair of hits, tallying four of the team's six hits.
Game 2
UMD hasn't been held to one-run of less since April 30, 2017, against the University of Minnesota-Crookston (L, 1-5) - 21 games- until today. The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the eighth inning when sophomore shortstop Chase Thomas reached on an error by the pitcher which allowed Krolikowski to score his third run of the day. UMD batters had four 1-2-3 innings, and struck out nine times against a mix of five different ESU pitchers.
"Overall, we played decent baseball today," head coach Bob Rients said, "but at key junctures in each game we did not get the big hit to score the runs needed to win both. Emporia was able to take advantage of the extra bases we gave up to win."
There will be a change in the matchups tomorrow as UMD will now take on William Jewell College (6-8) at 12 p.m., and will play ESU at 3 p.m. The Cardinals are 1-6 on the road so far this season after losing their last six. Â
