FREDERICKSON, BULLDOGS SNAP LOSING STREAK IN NSIC OPENER SPLIT WITH WILDCATS

After several changes to the times and location of the games, the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team saw its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action of the season against Wayne State College (Neb.). The Bulldogs won the first game 4-2, and lost the rematch 8-2.

UMD (5-9; 1-1 NSIC) went into the matchups riding a six-game losing streak - its worst stretch of games since March 23 - March 31, 2014 when it also lost six in a row.

Senior lefty Marcus Frederickson (W, 2-0) continues to make his case as the go-to starter this season after his performance on the mound Thursday against the Wildcats' lineup (7-9; 5-1 NSIC). The southpaw worked the mound for 6.1 innings while tying a season-high eight strikeouts. Frederickson had allowed just one runner to reach base (a single in the third) before giving up back-to-back hits to start the seventh. He would strikeout the third batter before sophomore Evan Vick finished up WSC in his fourth relief appearance of the season. Vick has yet to allow an earned run in 5.2 innings on the mound in 2018.

Sophomore designated hitter (DH) Chris Saltzmann tripled his career stolen base total (3) with his first multi-stolen base game of his collegiate career, both coming in the fourth. Saltzmann also garnered his first hit of the season with a single to right field in the fourth off a 3-1 count.

In the rematch, freshman DH Kaylan Legred notched his first collegiate hit, a single to right-center, in the fourth. The Bulldogs took a quick 2-0 in the first on one hit and two walks in the inning. UMD tamed WSC until a seven-run, seven-hit, two-walk fourth inning that opened the doors up for a 7-2 WSC lead. The Wildcats tacked on one more in the fifth as they defeated the Bulldogs 8-2. The rematch marked the second game of the year in which the UMD defense committed no errors in the field.

After collecting at least one hit in both games, senior catcher Tyler Midas moves his hitting streak to six games and now has a hit in 12 of the team's 14 games.

UMD will take on WSC on Friday in Wayne, Neb., with first pitch in game one scheduled for 12 p.m.

The Bulldogs will play at home for the first time this season against the University of Mary (2-12; 0-4 NSIC) on Tuesday (March 27) at Wade Stadium. The first of the two games will be held at 1:30 p.m.
