The University of Minnesota Duluth went 2-1 in its final weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play for 2018, capping things off with a 6-3 victory over the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday morning at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.The Bulldogs fell to NSIC champion Augustana University 9-0 on Saturday in Duluth before bouncing back to take down visiting St. Cloud State University 7-2 later that day.
UMD, now 9-4 overall, tied both Sioux Falls and Bemidji State University for fourth place in the final NSIC standings with a 7-4 record. That represents the highest NSIC finish for a Bulldog club since 2003 when UMD captured the league title
Freshmen
Natalie Cahill (No. 4) and
Isabel Thiner (No. 6) and senior
Katie Baasch (No. 5) each won their final two singles matches of the weekend with Cahill doing so both times in straight sets. In doubles, both the No. 2 unit of Baasch and sophomore
Elsa Erickson as well as the No. 3 team of Cahill and Tiner prevailed in the St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls matches.
Cahill currently leads the 2018 Bulldogs in singles winning percentage with a .875 mark (off a 7-1 record) while Baasch has racked up a team-leading nine singles victories (she's 9-4 on the year).
The Bulldogs, who have won five of their last six matches, will host the University of Eau Claire this Friday (April 13) at either the Longview Tennis Club (weather permitting) or the Duluth Indoor Sports Center at 4 p.m.
