There was a number of runs put up on the board in the University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State University-Mankato series, and all but one went to Mavericks.
The Bulldogs (13-13 overall; 9-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were done in twice by Minnesota State, falling 3-1 and 12-0 in Superior, Wis.
With the temperatures in the mid-30's and clear skies, UMD played its 18th and 19th neutral site games of 2018, surpassing the totals of the previous three seasons.
Minnesota State toyed with UMD in game one, with pitcher Quinn Ahern throwing 3.2 perfect innings before senior catcher Tyler Midas broke it up with a single down the right field line. Ahern held the Bulldogs to three hits and one run while striking out four. The lone run for UMD came in the sixth inning when freshman Henry George singled in senior Colin Baumgard. Senior lefty Marcus Frederickson tied a career-high by allowing 10 hits, but maintained his control with his third start of the season - totaling 18.1 innings - without giving up a walk.
The offensive struggles carried over into the rematch as the Bulldogs notched just three hits again while being shutout for the second time this season. No Bulldog made it past second base in the nightcap.
UMD will take on St. Cloud State University this Wednesday (April 11) at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Huskies rank first in the NSIC with an overall .319 batting average, RBI's (190) and walks (117), and second in runs (205), hits (290), doubles (50), triples (10), home runs (22).
