UMD TAKES CARE OF NORTHERN STATE TO BUST SKID FROM WOLVES

The streak finally came to an end.

It had not happened since Dec. 17, 2011 but the University of Minnesota Duluth once again defeated Northern State University 57-41 to continue its winning ways at Romano Gymnasium this afternoon. The Bulldogs grabbed the weekend sweep and maintained a perfect home record (7-0) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action after beating the Wolves for the first time in 14 attempts.

On that Saturday eight years ago, UMD held Northern State to 52 points and forced 26 turnovers as the Bulldogs had four players hit double figures. Today, UMD collected a season-high nine blocks and turned the ball over a season-low three times for its 11th NSIC win of the season. The Bulldogs (12-5; 11-3 NSIC) also had balanced production tonight as three players reached double figures and eight players tallied a point.

The Wolves (8-12; 5-9 NSIC) were outscored in every quarter as shot making came at a premium. Northern State knocked down only 16 buckets on the day and shot a tad bit below 30 percent. The Wolves had seven field goals in the opening quarter but registered three each in the next three quarters. Senior guard Sammy Kozlowski, and sophomore guard Taylor Schneider tabbed seven of the team's eight steals for the Bulldogs while junior forward Katie Stark, sophomore forward Sarah Grow and freshman forward Brooke Olson had the interior on lock down. The three forwards were in on all nine of UMD's blocked shots. Grow swatted a game-high four shots, Stark tied her career high (three blocks) and Olson recorded her collegiate high (two blocks).

The Bulldogs scored a quarter-high 20 points in the opening quarter but only carried a three-point lead into the second. They doubled their lead at the half and halted the Northern State offense to just 14 second-half points. UMD pulled away in third and coasted in the fourth as it held a 23-point lead with under five minutes left. The Bulldogs converted 22 points off turnovers compared to six by Northern State.

Kozlowski stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Olson registered 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting including knocking down a pair of triples. Sophomore guard Payton Kahl tallied 10 points on a perfect night from the field, going 4-for-4.

UMD returns to action next Friday as they host to Winona State University. Tip-off against the Warriors is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
