For the second day in a row, the University of Minnesota Duluth couldn't come up with a win against nationally ranked St. Cloud State. The Bulldogs dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader (8-2 and 7-4) at Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, Wis.
In the opening setback, five errors hurt the Bulldogs as the Huskies climbed to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. Sophomore centerfielder
Henry George drove in UMD's first run of the game in the fifth inning, scoring senior third baseman
Eric Yachinich. George, who drove in both UMD runs, would add to the Bulldog's tally in the seventh inning by reaching base on a fielder's choice, plating sophomore second baseman
Anders Brown. Rookie right-hander Ben Shephard, in his fourth start of the season, was roughed up for five runs on six hits while surrendering three walks. Junior right hander
Jaylen Hakes tossed the final 2.1 innings of the game, giving up three runs on one hit and issuing one base on balls.
In the nonconference series finale, the Bulldogs (8-23 overall and 6-15 in the NSIC) racked up 12 hits but were unable to complete a comeback on the Huskies (27-6 overall; 15-4 NSIC), who took all three games in the weekend series. Brown got the scoring started for the Bulldogs in the fifth inning with a base hit, bringing in rookie catcher
Tyler Peterson. UMD would add two more in the sixth inning when junior first baseman
Alex Welders double drove in rookie shortstop
McCale Peterson and senior designated hitter
Tyler Wojciechowski. In the eighth inning, rookie
Tosten Mann would round out the scoring for the Bulldogs, smashing a double to right field and driving in Welder to cut the Husky lead to two runs.
Liam Blaschko, in his second start of the 2019 campaign, surrendered four runs on eight hits while fanning three and issuing one walk. Sophomore
Mitchell Waletzki, sophomore
Paul Petit, and senior
Evan Vick all pitched in relief for the Bulldogs in the setback.
The Bulldogs will resume Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Tuesday, April 16, when they host Northern State in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
