The University of Minnesota Duluth dominated game one, a 12-3 victory, behind a complete-game outing from senior right hander
Nick Dorfman but couldn't finish off the sweep against the University of Sioux Falls, falling 7-4 in the rematch of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D.
In the opening game rout, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-3 advantage in the second inning and wouldn't look back. Trailing by two entering the bottom of the second, senior third baseman
Eric Yachinich tied the game when he advanced home on an error by the Cougar second baseman. In the very next at-bat, junior right fielder
Drew Stewart sent a go-ahead three-run home-run over left field fence, driving in sophomore center fielder
Henry George and sophomore second baseman
Anders Brown.
UMD would add two more runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth to push their advantage to nine runs. Brown and senior left fielder
Cory Krolikowski also chipped in RBI base hits for the Bulldogs, who entered the day batting a much improved .313 over their past nine games. Dorfman, in his fourth and most impressive start of the 2019 campaign, earned his second consecutive win for UMD by fanning seven and walking one while surrendering three runs on five hits.
In the game two setback, despite six Cougar errors, the Bulldogs (8-20 overall and 6-12 in the NSIC) couldn't complete a ninth inning comeback to sweep Sioux Falls (9-24 overall; 7-13 NSIC). Trailing 7-2 in the ninth, Stewart advanced home on a error by the Cougar shortstop and later in the inning, senior first baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski scored when Krolikowski grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to cut the Cougar lead to three runs.
Sophomore right hander
Wyatt O'Bey (0-2), in his second start of the season, surrendered three runs on four hits while striking one and issuing four base on balls in 2.1 innings of work. UMD used seven relievers in rematch, including sophomore
Paul Petit, rookie
Aaron Wukmir, senior
Evan Vick, senior
Alex Ferguson, sophomore
Sean Flaherty, rookie
Zach Matthews, and senior
Jeremy Thorson.
The Bulldogs, who racked up 23 hits in Tuesday's doubleheader, will be back in action Saturday, April 13 when they take on NSIC rival St. Cloud State in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
