BULLDOGS START 2019 WITH WIN OVER WILDCATS

One goal was all the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team needed to pick up a 1-0 nonconference win against Northern Michigan University Friday night at Griggs Field.

The Bulldogs outshot the Wildcats 7-3 in the first half, but the highlight of the game came at the 27:25 mark off a free kick 47 yards out from goal. Junior midfielder Holly Kaboord's long kick found junior center back Shannon King in stride, and King's head redirected the ball into the back of the net from eight yards out to give UMD the 1-0 lead -- and eventual game-winning goal.

With an additional four shots in the second half, UMD outshot NMU 11-6 in the contest, but more importantly, landed seven of those 11 hits on goal. Sophomore Hannah Caldwell led the Bulldogs with three shots, while both Kaboord and senior midfielder Nan Glinsek recorded two.

In her first start as a Bulldog, sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Grenz earned her first shutout of the season with three saves, including a diving save midway through the second half that was the best stop of the night. Wildcat goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto had six saves, and NMU, tagged with 15 fouls in the match, falls to 0-1 overall.

The Bulldogs -- who improve to 17-4-3 all-time against the Wildcats -- will continue their nonconference homestand Sunday when the host Michigan Tech University at Griggs Field at 1:00 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Shannon King's goal, as well as start to the game, were firsts in her UMD collegiate career ... the Bulldogs have now won five-straight games against NMU, dating back to the 2015 season.
