BULLDOGS TAKE STRONG START AND RUN WITH IT TO TOP BEAVERS

The University of Minnesota Duluth headed to Minot, ND, taking on and beating Minot State University 93-69. The Bulldogs now carry a 13-3 overall record on the year, going 8-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference the Beavers fall to 6-10 on the year, carrying a 0-10 record against NSIC opponents.
 
UMD would shoot 54.7% (29-53) from the floor, grabbing 29 rebounds with six steals and 12 3-pointers. MISU would shoot 43.9% (25-57) from the floor while grabbing 25 rebounds, six steals and nine 3-pointers.
 
Scoring wouldn't start until redshirt freshman guard Drew Blair would nail a seep 3-pointer after two minutes, to which the Beavers would respond with a 2-pointer of their own. Minot State would take the lead with 16:14 remaining off of a layup. Senior forward Brandon Myer would score one of his own to take the lead back. The Bulldogs would score two baskets in a row from Blair and Myer, and the Bulldogs would take a 14-11 lead into the first media timeout. Freshman guard Charles Gorres would hit a 3-pointer once play picked back up. The sides would trade baskets, and UMD would take a 19-17 lead into a timeout. Minot State would take the lead back with a 3-pointer out of the timeout. Gorres would drain a deep 3-pointer to tie things back at 22 a side. After the sides would battle and trade points, UMD would hold a 29-24 lead before Minot State took a short timeout. The Bulldogs would continue to score out of the timeout, grabbing four points and a 33-24 lead heading into a media timeout with 4:37 left in the first half. The Beavers would score a 3-pointer before Myer would drain one of his own. Gorres would score a 3-pointer of his own just before the 2-minute mark, grabbing a 39-29 lead. The Bulldogs would take a 49-34 lead into the half.
 
The Bulldogs would open scoring in the second half with a quick 2-pointer before MISU would drop two free throws. The Beavers would score back to back 2-pointers to put the score to 51-41 with 17:00 remaining in the game. After a quick timeout, Myer would score two baskets to grab four points. MISU would score two baskets in a row before a media timeout would take place with UMD up 55-45 with 14:47 remaining. The Beavers would score two more baskets to pull to within five, 55-50 in favor of the Bulldogs. Myer would score a layup and draw a foul in the process, making the free throw to complete the 3-point play. Blair would draw a foul off a steal, and drain both shots in the process. Myer would follow with a pair of his own. UMD would continue to score, with Illikainen making two free throws as well. MISU would take a pair of their own and make them both, putting the score to 68-52. Blair would draw a foul while making a basket heading into a media timeout. Blair would sink the free throw out of the timeout. MISU was able to score two free throws and make a layup to put them at 59 points, with UMD still having a 15 point lead at 74-59 with 7:47 left on the clock. UMD would hold the lead, extending it to 26 with 2:30 left on the clock with a 3-pointer from Myer, putting the Bulldogs up 91-65 heading into a timeout for UMD. The Bulldogs would take the lead and finish out the game, winning by a margin of 24, 93-69.
 
Myer would finish with 36 points on the evening, shooting 11-17 from the floor, grabbing nine rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist. Gorres would score 19, shooting 6-10 from the floor with four 3-pointers, grabbing five rebounds, three blocks and one steal. Blair would drop 18, grabbing three rebounds with one steal and one assist. Illikainen would score five with six rebounds and two steals..
 
The Bulldogs will come home to Duluth, Minn. to take on a pair of NSIC opponents in Minnesota State (Jan. 17) and Concordia-St. Paul (Jan. 18).
