Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kevin Rivers

COMEBACK ATTEMPT FALLS SHORT AS NO. 20 BULLDOGS FALLS AT HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON

The University of Minnesota Duluth battled back from a 15-point second-half deficit but dropped their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home game of the season, 67-65, to Minnesota State University-Mankato at Romano Gymnasium Friday night in Duluth, Minn.

Senior forward Alex Illikainen got the Bulldogs rolling early by connecting on a three from the top of the key and a lay-in from just under the basket that gave the Bulldogs an early 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs wouldn't take the lead again until the 10:15 mark of the first half when sophomore guard Hunter Plamann drilled a three from the right-wing that put UMD up 17-16. After redshirt-freshman guard Drew Blair beat three Mavericks to a loose ball, he found senior guard Logan Rohrscheib, who was all alone on the left-wing and tied the game up once more at 22 with a three-pointer. Minnesota State would grab their largest lead of the first half with just over a minute to go when Kevin Krieger nailed a three from the left wing to put Minnesota State up 33-22 at halftime.

Illikainen found a cutting Blair for a left-handed lay-in to get the Bulldogs on the board in the second half and cut the Maverick lead to 36-24. With 14:27 remaining, Illikainen battled his way through contact to convert a lay-in and bring the Bulldogs back to within 10 points at 41-31. Freshman guard Jack Middleton's free throw off of the back end of a three-point play with just under eight minutes remaining pulled the Bulldogs back to within eight points at 52-44. Freshman guard Charles Gorres cashed in on a three from the right-wing for his first points of the game and cut the Maverick lead down to four points at 59-55 with 3:53 remaining. Two pull up jumpers from Corvon Seales, the second a step back from the short corner, would put the Mavericks up 63-55. With 16.9 seconds remaining, Entwisle converted an unconventional three-point play by throwing the ball off the rim, grabbing the rebound and laying it back in pull the Bulldogs back to cut the Maverick lead to 65-61. On Minnesota State's ensuing inbound, Rohrscheib poked the ball away and found Blair under the basket to bring the deficit to two points. On the other end of the floor, Minnesota State would go one-of-two on free throws and up by three points would elect to foul, sending Entwisle to the line for two shots. Entwisle converted both attempts from the charity stripe to make it a one-point game at 66-65 with 5.8 seconds remaining. UMD had to foul after the ensuing inbounds play and MSU missed the back-end of the one-and-one. The miss gave Entwisle an attempt from half-court for the win but it would bounce off the backboard and hand the Bulldogs their first home defeat of the regular season.

Notables:
Minnesota State controlled the paint early and often, outscoring the Bulldogs 16-4 in the first half and 40-30 for the game … both teams struggled early from beyond the arc, Minnesota State shot 5-17 (29.4%) and UMD was 4-17 (23.5%) in the first half … MSU's largest lead of the game was 15 points at the 17:26 mark of the second half but it would be cut all the way down to one point.

Three Bulldogs landed in double figures for points Friday evening: Blair (21 points, 7-17 FG), Illikainan (13 points, 5-14 FG), and Rohrscheib (10 points, 2-5 FG) … the Bulldogs turned in another stellar night from the free-throw line, converting 20-22 attempts.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back and finish up the weekend homestand tomorrow (Jan. 18) with a bout against NSIC rival, Concordia-St. Paul. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Romano Gymnasium.
