BULLDOGS FALL TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARY TO SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES

The University of Minnesota Duluth lost to the University of Mary 80-70, giving UMD their first loss of the season. UMD is now 2-1 (1-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) overall while UMary improves to 2-4 (2-4 in the NSIC).

The Bulldogs started off the game slower than their past two games where they took big leads early. The Bulldogs found themselves down nine points with 3:01 left in the first half, due in part to UMary shooting the lights out in the first half. The Marauders shot 50% (6-12) on 3-pointers and 59.3% (16-27) on field goals while UMD shot just 28.6% (4-14) on 3-pointers and 46.9% (15-32) on field goals.

UMD went into halftime trailing 43-38.

After halftime, it was a game of runs. The Marauders went on a 17-4 scoring run coming out of halftime to take an 18-point lead. UMD answered back with a 9-0 run of their own that included two 3-pointers from junior guard Mason Steffen to make the score 51-60 with just over 11 minutes left to play in the game. Both teams then traded baskets until UMD eventually pulled the game within five points with 2:01 left. However, UMary would end up denying the Bulldogs a comeback as they went on a 5-0 run to close out the game, giving UMD the 10-point loss.

Overall, the Bulldogs shot 38.6% (27-70) from the field, 32.3% (10-31) on 3-pointers, were out rebounded by UMary 43-28, but only had six turnovers to UMary's 16.

Freshman guard Joshua Brown led UMD in scoring with 19 points, went 5-11 on 3-pointers and had four steals. Freshman forward Austin Andrews finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and one block. Steffen finished with 11 points, and shot 3-3 on 3-pointers and redshirt sophomore guard Drew Blair finished with nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to be back at home again next weekend (Jan. 22 and Jan. 23) against Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
