Today the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team finished a rain suspended Saturday single, then proceeded to play its regularly scheduled NSIC double-header with the Winona State Warriors. The Bulldogs tried to play spoiler but fell before completing a comeback in the resumption of their first game falling 6-5. Winona State would handle the Bulldogs with ease in game two of the day downing UMD 12-1. Game three would be an extra inning battle but the Bulldogs could not outlast the Warriors falling 5-4.

In game one the Bulldogs would get on the board first via a
Tosten Mann RBI scoring
Henry George.
Ben Shepard got the start for the Bulldogs. Winona State would answer the early UMD with an RBI single tying the game 1-1. UMD would manufacture two runs in the top of the second inning courtesy of a passed ball and a failed pick off attempt. Winona State would again answer in the next half inning as they rattled off three runs in the second inning of play to take a 4-3 lead. The Warriors would add a single run in the bottom of the third and then the rain came. The tarp would first come on for about a half hour before the start of the fifth inning, and then again at the top of the sixth before the umpires suspended the game due to field conditions. The game resumed today at noon and Winona State would add the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the sixth making the score 6-3. In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs would try to make a comeback as they brought two runs home courtesy of a
Tosten Mann RBI single, and an
Anders Brown HBP which scored
Henry George. The Bulldogs would leave the bases loaded as they succumb to defeat in game one 6-5. Shepard was charged with the loss, his second of the season. Kyle Gendron for the Warriors would be credited with the win, his third of the season.

In game two of the day, things just did not go the Bulldogs way.
Mitchell Waletzki got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs. UMD would threaten in the first inning but
Henry George would be left at third and
Brandt Kolpack would be stranded at second. The Warriors would grab an early lead as they pushed across a run in the bottom of the first via an RBI single. UMD would again threaten in the third but this time
Tim Pokornowski would be left at third as the Warriors pitched out of trouble. Winona State would capitalize in the bottom of the third, as they would bring seven runs to the plate on six hits stretching their lead to 8-0. A Pokornowski walk would bring home
Anders Brown to get UMD on the board. That is the only run the Bulldogs would be able to manufacture as the Warriors would add four more runs to get us to our final score of 12-1. Waletzki would be charged with the loss, his second of the season. Austin Savary would go the distance for the Warriors pitching all seven innings, he records his first win of the season.

The final game of the series took on a slower start as both the Bulldogs and the Warriors were held out of the scorebook through the first three innings of play.
Russ Tanner got the start for UMD and was dialed in early as he struck out five through the first three innings. The Warriors would eventually get on the scoreboard first courtesy of a wild pitch, which scored a run. That score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth when Winona State would add three runs to stretch their lead to 4-0. In the top of the seventh UMD would begin to start chipping into the Winona State lead. Right fielder
Tim Pokornowski would send a ball over the right field fence to get the Bulldogs on the board and the score moving to 4-1.
Paul Petit hurled a scoreless bottom of the seventh to keep the deficit at three and allowed the top of the eighth to be a big one for UMD. In the top of the inning
Hayden Brown would score on a wild pitch, and
Alex Wattermann would connect with a pitch shooting it over the fence in right center to tie the game at four. Both teams would fail to put home a run in regulation as we headed to extras. The Warriors would break through in the bottom of the twelfth inning via a sacrifice fly as they walked it off.
Liam Blaschko would be record the loss his first of the season. Justin Firpo would be credited with the win, his first of the season.
