Game Recap: Baseball |

BULLDOGS EARN SATURDAY SPLIT ON ARM OF BLASCHKO

Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball team earned a split of their Saturday double-header with Wayne State College. The Bulldogs were defeated in game one 12-3 and squeaked out a narrow 10-9 victory in the nightcap. The Bulldogs now sit at 6-15 (4-13) in the NSIC.

In game one the Wildcats jumped out to an early substantial lead as they hung  five runs on the Bulldogs in the first inning. The Bulldogs would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Anders Brown RBI single that would bring home two UMD runners, and an Alex Wattermann sacrifice fly. That would be the only runs UMD would bring across in the first game. Wayne State would add runs in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th innings to get us to our final score of 12-3.

UMD Notables:
George 1-3, R
Kolpack 1-2, R, BB
Brown, A: 2-3, R, 2RBI
Wattermann: 1-2, RBI

Game two was a high scoring affair in which Ben Shepard started on the bump for the Bulldogs. In this game UMD would be the team to have the big first inning as the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the first inning. Anders Brown got things started when he lined a pitch off the Wayne State pitcher which resulted in a RBI single. McCale Peterson would ground out to short stop but knock in the second run of the game. Tyler Peterson would single to right scoring Anders Brown making the score 3-0. With Tyler Peterson and Alex Watterman on the bases Brodie Paulson would lower the boom sending a towering drive off of the right field scoreboard as UMD stretched their lead to six. In his second at-bat of the inning Henry George would single in Sam Tanner to score their seventh run of the inning. Wayne State would get one back in the top of the second but the Bulldogs would answer as McCale Peterson would double scoring Anders Brown. From that point on the Wildcats would begin to chip away at the Bulldog lead. They would bring across two runs in the top of the fourth, and five runs in the fifth inning to tie things at eight. There would be some calm in the 6th and 7th innings as no runs were scored. The Bulldogs would break through in the bottom of the eighth and take the lead for good. UMD would score its ninth run on what was an awkard play all around. The suicide squeeze was on for the Bulldogs but with the pitch in the dirt Henry George was able to successfully steal home. McCale Peterson would walk later in the inning recording his third RBI of the game and bringing in the game winning run. Wayne State would get one back in the top of the ninth but wouldn't be able to get back even as Liam Blaschko shut the door on the Wildcats. Speaking of Blaschko who came on in relief of Shepard in the fourth innning threw four and two thirds inning of one run ball, sprinkling in four strikeouts to secure the win for UMD his second of the season.

UMD Notables:
George: 2-5, R, RBI
Kolpack: 3-5, 2R
A. Brown: 2-4, 2R, RBI

T. Peterson: 1-2, R, RBI
