Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth tennis team closed out its regular season today with a victory on its home court. The Bulldogs won 4-3 over St. Cloud State University and finish the regular season with a 5-6 record, going 3-2 at home.
St. Cloud State would get the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot over UMD's Mallory Lithun/Shay Callaway and Isabel Thiner/Natalie Cahill, respectively. The No. 3 pair for UMD of Emily Rahrick and Abby Johnson would get a 6-2 win over their opponents.
However, UMD would come out strong in singles to end the regular season with a win. The Bulldogs would only suffer two losses in singles—No. 1 Sophie Lynch would lose 1-6, 0-6, while No. 3 Mallory Lithun would take her opponent to three sets but ultimately drop 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.Â
In the No. 2 spot, Natalie Cahill swept her opponent 6-0 in both sets. No. 4 Shay Callaway would also emerge victorious in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Callaway emerges from her first collegiate regular season with only one loss, racking up nine victories over the course of the season.Â
No. 5 Isabel Thiner would also win her match, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 6 Abby Johnson would close it out for the Bulldogs, winning 6-2, 6-0. After the match, Johnson remarked that the team "came out strong after coming off a tough match last weekend and came through with a good win. I'm excited to see what we can do at the conference tournament next weekend!"
Sophie Lynch commented, "St. Cloud is always fun to play. We fought hard and came out on top. Battling is never preferred, but our team did amazing and stayed persistent! A huge shoutout to Abby [Johnson] and Mallory [Lithun] for staying strong and making our whole team so proud! We are looking forward to the conference tournament where we can cut loose, have fun, and play amazingly!"
Echoing her players' enthusiasm about tonight's match, Head Coach Jessica Worden said, "To finish the season with a win at home was a great feeling. The team was able to rally back after losing the doubles point to clinch the win in singles! I'm so proud of how everyone leaves their heart on the court. We look forward to bringing our best next weekend at the conference tournament!"
