The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team lost a close game tonight, two goals to one, after the visiting Rockhurst Hawks scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute.
Jackie Jares scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs tonight in the 47th minute, her first goal of the season and first collegiate goal. Sarah Stange recorded the assist -- also her first of the season. Jares' equalizer came just 13 seconds after Rockhurst scored their first goal of the game.
The Bulldogs found their stride as the game went on, with energy building as the game progressed. Possession was split between the teams, with UMD finishing the game with 47% possession overall.
Captain Holly Kaboord led the team with four shots. Tonight's goal scorer, Jackie Jares, had three shots on the night, which ties her season record -- she also had three shots in UMD's loss to Northern Michigan last weekend. Lauren Singstock, Emilia McGiffert, and Victoria Thorson each recorded a shot as well. The Bulldogs ended the night with 10 shots to Rockhurst's 15. Goalkeeper Sophia Grenz recorded six saves in tonight's loss.
Freshman Emilia McGiffert -- who scored the lone goal in last week's defeat to Northern Michigan -- made her first collegiate start for the Bulldogs tonight, as did sophomore transfer Madeline Felton.
Head Coach Greg Cane was impressed with his team's energy tonight: "I thought the team came out with a lot of energy, and that energy built throughout the game. We managed the game well and played better than we have in the last few games. We were so set for a great night, with everything from the Color Guard to the weather to the fans. The players were excited to get out there tonight."
The Bulldogs will be back in action next week as they open NSIC conference play against Minot State University at home. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm at Malosky Stadium.
