FLAHERTY AND SODERBERG GRAB WCHA WEEKLY HONORS

The  No. 4/5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team picked up two of the four available weekly Western Collegiate Hockey Association awards for a second consecutive week Monday.

Maggie Flaherty was named the WCHA's Defender of the Week, while Emma Soderberg was named the WCHA's Goaltender of the Week.  It is the first weekly conference award for both fifth-year seniors so far this season.

Flaherty, who just under nine months ago suffered a season-ending injury, scored the game-winning, power play overtime goal against St. Lawrence University Thursday UMD's 3-2 comeback thriller.  The Lakeville, Minn. native also led the team with seven blocks over the Bulldogs two games in Canton, N.Y. and had seven shots on goal.

Soderberg manned the pipes for 121:55 minutes for a 0.98 goals against average, and allowed just one even strength goal in 47 shots.  A product of Jarved, Sweden, Soderberg made the second most saves in the WCHA in the first two weeks of action -- 45.  Friday's 4-0 clean sheet over No. 11 Penn State University was Soderberg's 12th career shutouts, which lands her into the No. 5 spot all-time at UMD.  Soderberg also has moved into the seventh spot for all-time minutes player by a goaltender with 3, 223:56, as well as the sixth spot for career saves with 1337.

Flaherty and Soderberg lead their unbeaten Bulldogs back into AMOSIL Arena this weekend for a WCHA series against Minnesota State University, Mankato.  The Friday-Saturday series gets underway at 6:00 p.m. Friday night and wraps up at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
