University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey senior goaltender Emma Soderberg led Sweden to its first Olympic win of these games, and junior forward Kassy Betinol scored her first Olympic goal (against Soderberg, no less), just some of the Bulldog headlines that came out of a busy day five in Beijing.
Â
In the night's last game at Wukesong Sports Centre, Soderberg helped Sweden hold on to a 2-1 win over a fiery Chinese squad that featured Betinol and defenseman Jessica Wong . Soderberg had 32 saves on 33 shots, but China's lone goal came from Soderberg's UMD teammate Betinol, who scored the game's first goal at 5:16 of the opening period. Sweden scored two goals early in the second period, and Soderberg did the rest to earn Sweden, with former Bulldog forward Michelle Lowenhielm, their first win in Beijing. Soderberg now has 112 saves on 118 shots in three Olympic games.
Â
In the other late game, held at National Indoor Stadium, Bulldog All-American Lara Stalder led Switzerland to its first win of the tournament, a 3-2 victory behind a goal and an assist from Stalder. Stalder had an assist on the opening Swiss goal at 11:52 of the first period before scoring the eventual game-winner at 1:21 of the third period. UMD's former captain ranks ninth in goals scored with three, the first non-Canadian or American player to crack the top-10. Overall, Stalder has three goals and 1 assist for four points through four games. Â
Â
In the first two games of the night, a delayed start eventually led to Canada, with blueliner Ashton Bell and Jocelyne Larcoque defeating the Russia Olympic Committee 6-1, with former Bulldog Alexandra Vafina getting the secondary assist on ROC's lone goal.Â
Â
In the second game at Wukesong Sports Centre, Denmark squeezed by the Czech Republic and Katerina Mrazova 3-2. Mrazova broke a 1-1 tie for the Czech Republic at 3:01 into the
second period, burying a second chance off a backdoor pass. But the Danes scored at 14:28 and less than a minute into the third period to win their first game of the tournament.
Â
"We know that none of these games are gonna be easy, and we have to play defense first and I don't think we did that today," said Mrazova. "We kinda forgot about that. I think it was really hard for (Svejdova). She was in the net for the first time and we knew that we had to help her and we didn't do that. So we have to start with a strong defense and build from that."Â
Â
"We were missing some finish," said Mrazova. "On offense, we were doing everything right and just missing that finishing touch. When we tried to shoot, it's kinda missing there. I would say we have to be a little more patient and wait for the right moment. We know it's not gonna be an easy game against Japan," said Mrazova. "We just want to forget about what happened today and focus on tomorrow."
Â
In the final preliminary games of the tournament, the U.S. and Maddie Rooney will take on Canada and Bell and Larocque to decide the winner of Group A, while Mrazova and the Czech Republic will face Japan to settle the winner of Group B. Sodberg and Lowehielm will take on Denmark, and the ROC and Vafina will face Finland.
