BULLDOGS BATS COME ALIVE AS THEY SWEEP THE DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST THE TRITONS

St. Louis, MO – The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs faced off against the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons on Saturday afternoon in a double header. The Bulldogs won game one 13-12 and followed it up with a 15-8 win in game 2.
 
Game One: UMD wins 13-12
The Bulldogs got the bats going early in game one as Trevor Gustafson doubled to bring Tosten Mann in. Tim Pokornowski followed that up with a single through the left side to score Gustafson from second base. The Bulldogs added one more run in the first inning as Pokornowski scored on a passed ball as the Bulldogs led 3-0. The Triotons responded with a homerun in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2. Trevor Gustafson once again came through in the top of the second as he singled to left field to score Brandt Kolpack as they made it a 4-2 game. Alex Watterman added to the Bulldogs lead as he homered to center field to increase the Bulldogs lead to 6-2. The Tritons offense woke up in a big way in the bottom of the fifth inning as they tallied 9 runs in the inning; all with two outs. The Bulldogs pitchers struggled as they walked 5 batters and hit 3 other batters. The Bulldogs offense once again responded as Alex Watterman double to left center to bring two runs home. Jack Puder followed that up with a double of his own to bring another to runs across as the Bulldogs trailed 10-11 going into the 7th inning. Ethan Cole reached on an error in the top of the 7th that brought Trevor Gustafson and Tim Pokornowski across the plate to take a 12-11 lead. Brandt Kolpack walked with the bases loaded to bring across one last run in the 7th inning to take a 13-11 lead. The Tritons had a bottom half rally fall short as they only got one run across as the Bulldogs went on to win 13-12.
 
Ben Reilley got his first win of the season in relief as he tallied one inning pitched and gave up no hits and struck out two batters. Alex Watterman got the save with one inning pitched. He gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 2 batters in his appearance. Alex Watterman went 2-3 from the plate with two walks on the day as he scored 3 times and drove in 4 runs. Tyler Gustafson went 2-4 with one walk. He also drove in 2 runs and scored twice. Tim Pokornowski went 2-4 from the plate with one walk. He also drove in a run and scored 3 times. Russ Tanner struck out 10 batters over 4.2 innings in his first start of the season.
 
Game Two: UMD wins 15-8
The Tritons started the scoring in the first inning with a RBI double. They continued their hot start with a home run to deep center to extend their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The Tritons once again added to their lead in the bottom of the third as two singles brought in two runs to extend their lead to 4-0. In the top of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs bats came alive. Brodie Paulson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score their first run. From there, Alex Wattermann singled to bring in two more UMD runs. Sam Tanner continued the hot inning as he singled in a run. Austin Gordon reached on a fielder's choice to bring in a run. Brandt Kolpack then singled with the bases loaded to bring in two more runs. Jack Puder singled to bring in yet another run. Alex Watterman, once again in the fourth inning, singled to bring in another run. A pair of wild pitches scored three more runs for the Bulldogs as they scored 12 runs in the fourth inning to jump out to a 12-4 lead.  The Tritons responded in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam to make it a 12-8 game. The Bulldogs added on 3 more runs in the 6th and 7th inning to extend their lead to 15-8.
 
Tosten Mann went 3-4 with a walk in the game. He also drove in a run and scored twice. Alex Watterman continued his strong offensive day as he went 2-4 with a walk and drove in 3 runs. He also scored twice. Jack Puder went 2-3 on the day and drove in 2 runs. He also scored 2 runs.  Ben Shepard got his first win of the season as he went 6 innings. He gave up 11 hits and 8 runs. He struck out 5 batters and walked 2.

The Bulldogs will finish their three-game series with the Tritons tomorrow. First pitch is at 12:00 PM.
