Duluth, Minn. -- The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs hosted the Wayne State Wildcats for a doubleheader on Tuesday morning. After winning game one 8-2, the Bulldogs dropped game two in a exciting 15-14 loss in 11 innings.
Game One:
The Bulldogs got the scoring going early as
Brodie Paulson hit a double to right center that scored
Trevor Gustafson.
Sam Tanner followed that up with a single to center field that scored
Brodie Paulson and
Tim Pokornowski as the Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead. The Wildcats answered in the top of the second inning thanks to a single through the left side of the infield to make it an 3-1 Bulldogs lead. The Bulldogs responded once again as
Trevor Gustafson singled in a run.
Tim Pokornowski followed that up with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Brandt Kolpack.
Brodie Paulson hit another double to left center that scored
Trevor Gustafson. The Bulldogs led 6-1 after two innings. From there,
Aaron Wukmir steadied the Wildcats offense as he allowed just 5 hits and 1 run over 4.2 innings while striking out 4. The Bulldogs added once again to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as
Brandt Kolpack doubled down the left field line and
Sam Tanner and
Ethan Cole bot scored as the Bulldogs took a 8-1 lead. The Wildcats added a run in the top of the 6th to make it a 8-2 game but the Bulldogs closed them out as they won game one 8-2.
Brodie Paulson went 3-3 in game one with three doubles, two RBI's and oen run.
Brandt Kolpack went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a run as well.
Sam Tanner added 2 RBI's of his own on the game.
Aaron Wukmir picked up his firs twin of the season, while Brody Sintek fell to 3-3 on the season for the Wildcats.
Game Two:
The Bulldogs got the bats going early again in game two as
Sam Tanner got the Bulldogs on the board with a two-run home run to center field.
Trevor Gustafson followed that up in the third inning with a two-run home run of his own to left center field.
Tim Pokornowski scored off of an Wildcats error in the third inning, and
Jack Puder brought in another run in the third inning off of a RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead after three innings.
Tim Pokornowski got in on the home run party for the Bulldogs as he hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats finally got on the board in the 6th inning as they scored two runs off of a two-RBI double. Their bats came alive in the 8th inning as they stormed back to scored 4 runs in the 8th inning to make it a 7-6 game. The Wildcats tied it up in the top of the 9th off of a triple to right center field. The Wildcats bats stayed hot in the top of the 10th inning as they added another 3 runs in the inning to take a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs bats woke back up in extra innings as
Sam Tanner hit a triple that scored
Tim Pokornowski.
Austin Gordon tied things up for the Bulldogs with a two-RBI double to left center field.
In the 11th inning, the Wildcats continued their hot hitting as they managed to score two runs with bases loaded off of a Bulldogs error and a walk. They then cleared the bases with a triple to right center as they took a 15-10 lead going into the bottom of the 11th. Once again, the Bulldogs offense stepped up in extras as
Trevor Gustafson hit a RBI double to right center as
Alex Wattermann scored.
Brodie Paulson hit his fifth double of the day as he scored
Tim Pokornowski and
Trevor Gustafson.
Austin Gordon stepped up once again with a single to left center to score
Brodie Paulson to make it a 15-14 Wildcats lead. Despite the Bulldogs having bases loaded with one out, they could not get the tying run across as they lost game two 15-14.
Tim Pokornowsk iwent 3-5 on the day with one home run and 4 runs.
Jack Puder went 3-6 on the day with a RBI, while
Austin Gordon went 3-6 on the day with 3 RBI's.
Trevor Gustafson went 2-6 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs, while
Brodie Paulson went 2-6 with 2 RBI's and 3 runs on the afternoon.
Sam Tanner also had a good day at the plate as he went 2-5 with 3 RBI's, two runs and a walk.
Eric Hinnenkamp had a strong start for the Bulldogs as he went 5.1 innings and allowed just 2 runs and had 4 strikeouts. Keean Allen Picked up the win for the Wildcats as Ryan Petersen picked up the save in game two.
