The University of Minnesota soccer team is set to take on Winona State University this upcoming Thursday for an ever-important Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.
UMD has two games left in the regular season and currently sit seventh in the conference. The Bulldogs enter Thursday's game on a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2). In conference play, UMD is undefeated at home for the first time since 2013.
Concordia St. Paul, Wayne State, and UMary are tied for eighth (5-4-2) and vying for the position as the final NSIC Playoff spot.
UMD's opponent, WSU, is fourteenth in the conference (1-6-4). They shutout the fifteenth team, Minnesota Crookston, 4-0 earlier this season for their only win. The Warriors have not scored in their last four games.
Senior Jackie Jares leads the Bulldogs in goals (8) and points (20) this season. She's scored in each of the last three games, including a two-goal performance against Southwest Minnesota State. During UMD's six-game streak, Jares totaled 12 points.
Jares was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week for scoring three goals this past weekend. Her game-opening goal Sunday was the fifth fastest in program history (1:09). She is currently second in the conference in goals and tied for first in points.
Junior Anna Tobias (12) and sophomore Miriam Marsan (10) have also reached double digits in individual points. The three Bulldogs have more points each than the highest scorer for Winona State.
A win Thursday would propel the Bulldogs past Augustana, Northern State, and Bemidji State, into third in the NSIC with two more games played. A tie would bring UMD's points total equal with NSU and BSU.
The Bulldogs faceoff against the Warriors in Winona, Minn. on Thursday, Oct 26 at 5 p.m.
