UMD RETURNS FROM LENGTHY BREAK, SPLITS PAIR OF NSIC TENNIS MATCHES

Kara Saemann

After opening the day with an 8-1 Northern Intercollegiate Conference setback to Minnesota State University-Mankato, the University of Minnesota Duluth bounced back and snapped a four-match losing skid by downing league rival Southwest Minnesota State University 7-2 at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. Saturday.

The Bulldogs (3-8 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC), who were making their first appearance on the court since March 9, got their lone win against Minnesota State-Mankato at No. 3 singles where the junior Kelsey Cunningham and freshman Katie Lincoln prevailed 8-6 over Hailey Robb and Kelly Lechowski. Lincoln (No. 4), Cunningham (No. 5), sophomore Allysa Brunelli (No. 1), and sophomore Kara Saemann (No. 2)  all claimed singles victories against the Mustangs while Brunelli and Saemann (No. 1), freshmen Bailey Kolles and Delaney Dobbs (No. 2) and Cunningham and Lincoln (No. 3) made it a UMD sweep in doubles. Cunningham and Lincoln are now a team-leading 7-4 on the year and have reeled off four straight triumphs as a tandem.

UMD will be in Sioux Falls, S.D., next weekend for its final regular season matches of 2013, taking on the University of Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon and both Northern State University and the University of Mary the following day. All three of those foes are fellow members of the NSIC.
