HUSKIES TAKE A BITE OF OUT BULLDOGS WITH LATE THIRD-PERIOD GOAL SATURDAY

There would be no comeback victory this time.

The University of Minnesota Duluth has rallied to win from a second-intermission deficit twice within the last three weeks and appeared to be headed in that direction again Saturday night in Houghton, Mich., but Mike Neville put the kibosh on those plans. The Michigan Tech sophomore center scored with 18.4 seconds to go in the third period to lift the No. 4 Huskies to a 4-3 victory over the No. 9 Bulldogs and a split in the non-conference weekend series.

The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 five minutes after the opening faceoff as Michigan Tech struck for goals 1:27 apart which ended the night for UMD rookie goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo. Junior Austin Farley cut the lead in half midway through the second period when he deflected in a shot from junior center Tony Cameranesi for his second goal (and third point) of the weekend. Michigan Tech, however, answered just 1:40 later and maintained that two-goal advantage until sophomore center Dominic Toninato, who scored twice in UMD's 3-1 triumph in Houghton, Mich., redirected sophomore defenseman Willie Raskob's shot past Michigan Tech goaltender Jamie Phillips. That gave Toninato 13 goals on the year -- the third-most in the nation at the moment. With 6:53 remaining in regulation, junior right winger Austyn Young banged in a rebound --while falling --  near the right side of the crease to knot the game up at 3-3. The Bulldogs went on to outshoot the Huskies 17-7 in the third period and 36-30 0n the night.

Junior Matt McNeely, who replaced Kaskisuo (who allowed two goals on four shots), finished with 24 saves in 55:00 minutes of work while making his first appearance since Oct. 17.

The loss was the Bulldogs' first to Michigan Tech in their last eight meetings (5-1-2) and their first at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena since Feb. 5, 2010 (7-1-1).

UMD (12-6-0 overall), which closed out the first half of its 2014-15 regular season schedule by winning nine of its last 11 games, will now break for the Christmas Holidays before returning to the ice on Jan. 2-3, 2015 to take on Lakehead University of Thunder Bay, Ont., in a pair of exhibition bouts.
