Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth stumbled in its final non-conference test, as Northern Michigan University relied on a second-half strike to edge the Bulldogs 2-1 in Marquette, Michigan on Friday night.
UMD falls to 0-3-0 in non-conference competition this season, while Northern Michigan picked up its first victory of the season and now sits at 1-2-0. The Bulldogs will have a shot to turn their fortune around on Sunday when they open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season against St. Cloud State University at home. UMD was a perfect 8-0 at home last season.
HIGHLIGHTS• Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Melby made her second start in-net for the Bulldogs and made four saves. NMU's first goal came on a penalty shot by sophomore Paula Hafner in the second minute, while the second was a long shot off a corner kick, with senior defender Kim Rietveld scoring with an assist by freshman Lindsey Tuggle off a corner kick in the 67th minute.
• Senior forward
Maureen Stormont broke through for the first time on the season, knotting the score at one apiece in the 10th minute. She was assisted by senior midfielder
Hannah Keil and junior forward
Sheridan Reiners. That assist marked the first of Reiners' UMD career.
UMD dominated the offense in the first half, but took a 1-1 tie to the locker room at half time despite a 17-4 edge in shots, including 8-2 on-goal. The Bulldogs netted their first goal of the season at the 10:24 mark of the match, ending a scoreless drought of nearly 200 minutes dating back to last season. Stormont chipped a long shot over the head of the goalkeeper from approximately 20 yards out, with assists from Keil and Reiners.
UMD came out of the break swinging, with a pair of early shots by Reiners and senior defender
Kelli Klun saved by Wildcat keeper Caroline Glantz. Glantz would need four saves in the second half, and 11 for the game, to hold onto the victory for NMU. Meanwhile, Melby stopped another pair in the second half but Rietveld buried a pass from Tuggle off a corner kick to put the Wildcats ahead for good.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will play host to St. Cloud State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Malosky Stadium. UMD will celebrate its 20th anniversary of soccer and honor alumnae at the match.
