HELLQUIST & "WOJO" FINISH NORTHWOODS LEAGUE FIRST HALF WITH DULUTH HUSKIES

The Northwoods League season began with a walk-off win for the Duluth Huskies with University of MInnesota Duluth senior-to-be Alex Wojciechowski coming around to score the game-winning run after a lead-off hit. The team nearly book-ended the season's first-half with a similar win, with Wojciechowski again representing the go-ahead score on first base, but it was not to be, and the local squad, which fielded a trio of Bulldogs so far in 2015 finished the first half with a fourth place finish in the NWL North Division, 20-16 on the year.

"Wojo" continued his hitting efforts from the 2015 season with UMD with the one missing piece being the home run power he flashed during the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season, hitting 12 home runs for the Bulldogs and none yet on the season for the Huskies. His .279 batting average is fourth among regular starters for Duluth, while he sits second on the team with eight doubles and 17 runs batted in out of the clean-up spot for head coach Daniel Hersey's squad, turning a temporary contract into a permanent deal with the team. He was joined in the starting line-up by a pair of UMD teammates, including left-handed starting pitcher Bo Hellquist. Hellquist is 3-1 on the year with six starts with a 3.19 ERA, second-best among starters for the Huskies. He's struck out 24 batters in 31.0 innings pitched.

In a move left with some criticism from the Bulldog faithful, another UMD player came and went for the Huskies in senior second baseman Jimmy Heck. Heck led Duluth in batting average at 23-of-63 (.365) when his temporary contract came to an end, drawing 13 walks and driving in 10 while positioned mainly in the bottom third of the line-up for the Huskies. He crossed the plate 11 times and lifted four doubles. Bulldog senior third baseman Kyle Comer also played in the league on a temp deal, batting .280 with seven RBIs in 11 games for the Thunder Bay Border Cats, including a pair of appearances at UMD's home-away-from-home of Wade Stadium against Duluth.

Fans looking to get out and see these Bulldogs will have plenty of options at the Wade over the next few weeks, as the Huskies play home games on 11-of-13 days starting July 3 including a Saturday afternoon tilt on the Fourth of July.
