The University of Minnesota Duluth hit 13 three-pointers, including eight in the second half, to knock off its bridge rival the University of Wisconsin Superior 89-63 in non-conference action at Romano Gym on Wednesday afternoon. Students from local elementary schools came out to fill the stands and cheer on the local squads.
Senior guard
Junior Coleman hit a trio of threes and finished 7-of-11 from the floor to lead UMD (11-3) with 19 points off the bench. The Bulldogs emptied their bench against UWS (7-6) after taking a 47-34 lead to the locker room, getting the first collegiate points - nine in all - from first-year guard
Cody Tomlinson while sophomore forward
Jake Wilson also had 10 off the bench. Senior forward Kirstofer Jackson led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds, all defensive, while also dishing out three assists and knocking back three blocks on the afternoon.
The game started out slow with both teams going quiet out of the gate. After starting the game in an 0-for-5 slump, the Bulldogs would finish the rest of the first half 17-of-29 and eventually shoot 51.6 percent for the game (32-of-62). UWS started out slowly as well but took an early 12-11 lead out of the game's first media timeout with 5:41 off the clock. Junior guard Zach Schradle made good on the second part of an and-one to give the YellowJackets the lead. He'd go on to match Coleman with a game-high 19 while also rounding out a double-double with 10 rebounds, eight on the defensive end. Senior forward Brian Lindblom also reached double digits with 15 points on the afternoon.
Despite giving way to the reserves late in the game, senior guards
Taylor Lavery and
Pierre Newton each hit double figures as well, with Newton scoring 16 with six rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes. Lavery had 13 points, two assists, and a steal to follow up on his NSIC North Division Player of the Week performance over the weekend. First-year guard
Trevor Entwisle had six points along with career-highs of three rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard
Ryan Kaczynski also netted his first collegiate points, scoring a lay-up and-one in the closing minutes of the game.
UMD will return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on the road this weekend, where the Bulldogs are 7-1 and will look to make a season sweep of North Division rivals Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota-Crookston when the teams meet up for the second time this season. UMD and BSU will tip off the weekend Saturday afternoon from Bemidji's Sanford Center at 4:00 p.m., following the women's contest.
