The University of Minnesota Duluth began the 2016 calendar year with five straight victories, but the Bulldogs have stumbled in six of their last eight, seeing their undefeated home record sullied twice in four games at Romano Gymnasium. This week, second-place UMD (15-9, 11-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiatge Conference) plays host to the first- and third-place teams in the NSIC North Division in No. 11 Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Northern State University, respectivefully. The Bulldogs will honor two charities and their six seniors on the weekend as well.
Friday night will be a tropical-themed night with prize giveaways for fans while UMD also celebrates Locks of Love with Regis Salon sponsoring haircuts for donation at halftime of the game. Saturday night will be senior night and school spirit themed while honoring the Play 4Kay foundation promoting breast cancer awareness in the name of former North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow.
While none of the Bulldog seniors have spent four seasons playing with the team, they've each made significant impacts during their time with the team. Senior transfers
Junior Coleman,
Kristofer Jackson,
Taylor Lavery,
Pierre Newton, and
Brendon Pineda join student manager-turned-center
Jake Harder in wrapping up their UMD careers in 2016. Senior guard
Pierre Newton, named a Player to Watch by the NSIC entering 2015-16, has made his biggest impact on the team this season including his epic 42-point performance against Southwest Minnesota State University on Jan. 30. His 16.6 points per game average is near-pace for a top-5 career performance at UMD. Senior guard
Taylor Lavery already made his mark on the record book hitting 14-of-14 free throws to match the program single game performance on Jan. 9 this season against Bemidji State University.
Senior forward
Brendon Pineda has averaged 13.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing, starting every game during the past two seasons. His career shooting percentage is 50.5 percentage. Senior guard
Junior Coleman was forced to sit out the 2014-15 season but returned this year to become the Bulldogs' sixth-man, averaging 8.9 points per game primarily in a reserve role. Senior swing forward
Kristofer Jackson has spent four seasons at UMD but also sat out last season. This year, he's become a spark off the bench, but in 2013, he matched the Bulldog program record with six blocks against the University of Wisconsin-Stout on November 19. Harder, who spent time as UMD's team manager, joined the Bulldogs roster officially to fill a much-needed big man role following the injury to
Brett Ervin ('15) prior to the 2013-14 season. He's played in 43 games and this year, fought back from a foot injury to rejoin the Bulldogs for one last go-around at midseason.
