The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team will host Western Collgiate Hockey Association foe St. Cloud State University this Friday and Saturday at AMSOIL Arena. With a 7:07 p.m. start Friday night, the Bulldogs will hold Military Appreciation Night, and ticket discounts will be available to all military members. UMD will wear special jerseys during the warm-ups, and all jerseys will be featured in a silent auction held on the concourse, with proceeds going to Operation One Voice. Fans can also fill out holiday cards for military members overseas while at the game. Saturday's game will get underway at 4:07 p.m., and the jersey auction will continue in concourse until the end of 2nd intermission. It will also be Father/Daughter Day, which will feature free ticket for girls 12 & under accompanied by dad/grandpa.
THE SERIES: UMD went 6-0 against St. Cloud State last season, outscoring the Huskies 23-6 in those six games. Against UMD, St. Cloud was scoreless in 13 power play attempts. All-time, the Bulldogs are now 62-11-5 versus SCSU.
UMD last met -- and swept -- St. Cloud State 5-0 and 6-2 on Feb. 23-24 in the quarterfinals of the WCHA playoffs.
On Feb. 23, Lara Stalder (2g, 1a) and Ashleigh Brykaliuk (3a) led UMD with three points, while Demi Crossman had two goals for the Bulldogs. In all, six players had two or more points for UMD, with a total of eight players inking the scoresheet. Goaltender Maddie Rooney made 21 saves to pick up her sixth shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.
After the Bulldogs were outshot in the first period on Feb. 24, UMD shelled the Huskies 21-3, resulting in three goals and a 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Stalder again led the way with three points (1g, 2a), while three other players registered two points -- Katerina Mrázová (1g, 1a), Ashleigh Brykaliuk (1g, 1a), and Catherine Daoust (2a), and 13 players notched a point in the win.
LAST TIME OUT: UMD split with Bemidji State in Bemidji, Minn. over the weekend, picking up the 3-2 win Friday before dropping a 2-1 decision on Saturday.
For the first time all season, the Bulldogs were not only outshot in a single game but an entire series. UMD got goals from Jalyn Elmes and Ashton Bell in the first period, and a goal from Naomi Rogge 31 seconds into the second period to build a 3-0 lead. BSU netted two tallies in the second period, but senior goaltender Jessica Convery made a UMD career-high 43 saves for the Bulldogs to preserve the win.
Saturday, the Beavers got out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Rogge netted her second goal of the series. UMD would come no closer than 2-1, however, and BSU again outshot UMD in the skate (30-18).
NOTES FROM THE BEMIDIJI STATE SERIES: BSU held UMD under its 32.4 shots on goal an average in both games. The Bulldogs put 22 shots on net Friday and 40 total in the series compared to the Beavers 75 on the weekend. It marked not only the first two games UMD has been outshot this season, but also the first series an opponent has put more pucks on net.
--Saturday's setback marks the first loss for the Bulldogs against the Beavers in eight meetings, dating back to January of 2016.
--All-time, UMD is now 67-13-4 against BSU.
TOP DOGS: UMD is led by freshman Naomi Rogge, who has five goals and three assists for eight points in 10 games. Sophomore defenseman Jalyn Elmes also has eight points on three goals and five assists in those same eight skates. Freshman Ashton Bell has four goals -- the second most among all Bulldogs so far.
Rogge currently ranks No. 14 in the NCAA among all freshmen with 0.80PPG
Sophomore defenseman Jalyn Elmes ranks fourth among league blueliners with a PPG average of. 0.80 on three goals and five assists in 10 games. Elmes leads all WCHA defenseman with two game-winning tallies.
Elmes also ranks 14th in the nation among all blueliners with a 0.80 PPG.
Senior goaltender Jessica Convery ranks fifth in the NCAA and third in the WCHA with two shutouts in eight games.
DISCIPLINED DOGS: UMD has the fewest penalty minutes per game of any team in the NCAA with just 4.4 a game. St. Cloud State, by contrast, who has the third fewest infractions in the WCHA, is averaging 6.2 penalty minutes per game.
BULLDOG NOTES: UMD sits 15th with its power play in the NCAA and third in the WCHA at 7-of-33 (21.2).
--UMD has equaled its opponents with nine goals in the first period, and seven in the third, but has been outscored 8-1 in the second period through its first 10 games.
--The Bulldogs have played just four of their first 10 games at home. UMD is 2-2 at AMSOIL, but just 1-5 away from Duluth. The Bulldogs will look for their first league win at home this weekend against the Huskies.
