Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Emporia State University saw its share of heroics against the University of Minnesota Duluth last weekend, but it was the Bulldogs who found themselves on the winning side of things in the rematch games.
UMD 4, Emporia State 3
After a quick 1-2-3 first inning by senior pitcher
Sam Hartmann (2-2)
, junior center fielder
Hannah Schmoll reached first after being hit by a pitch. Schmoll would steal second for her team-leading fifth stolen base on the season, but would ultimately be left stranded. A solo shot in the top of the third put Emporia on the board first, before the Hornets tacked on two more with a two-run homerun in the fourth to widen their lead to 3-0. In its first six innings, UMD had just two hits and had left six runners on base.
A walk to freshman left fielder Jayme Langbehn would get things started for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Langbehn would be driven in by a one-out double off the bat of sophomore right fielder
Sammi Sadler. For the second time in the game, Schmoll would reach first after being HBP. With two on base and one out, junior second baseman
Natalie Wright laced a ground rule double to pull UMD within one run, 3-2. The Hornets would head to their bullpen for a pitching change with junior shortstop
Becky Smith heading to the plate. Smith wasted little time belting a double to drive in Schmoll and Wright, resulting in a 4-3 walk-off win for UMD.
UMD 4, Emporia State 2
Freshman pitcher
Ashley Taipale started game two for the Bulldogs looking for the sweep. Schmoll kicked off the bottom of the first inning with a line drive single to center field before moving herself into scoring position with a stolen base. Smith followed with a hit of her own -- hitting a hard-hit single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Freshman infielder
Lauren Oberle lined a hit off of the pitcher for an RBI as Schmoll came around to score. UMD wasn't done scoring in the opening frame, as sophomore infielder
Kalynn Tilton blooped in another single to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
UMD would add another pair of runs in the fourth inning, due in part to an RBI single by Sadler.
Emporia State threatened in the top half of the fifth inning, but a highlight-reel diving play by Smith and a 6-3-5 double play on the next batter kept the Hornets scoreless.
Taipale continued to build on her successful afternoon, allowing just one run in six innings of work. Sophomore pitcher
Valerie Hohol entered the game in the seventh inning with a runner on first looking for her first save of the season. Despite seeing the bases loaded, Hohol would work her way out of the inning to give the Bulldogs their second consecutive win.
UMD will take the field again on March 5, as they take a trip to Clermont, Fla. as part of the SFX Athletics Spring Games. The Bulldogs open the event with a pair of games against the University of Southern Indiana and Grand Valley State University.
