BULLDOGS SWEEP MARAUDERS BEHIND SOLID PITCHING PERFORMANCES

The University of Minnesota Duluth rebounded from being swept last weekend with a sweep of their own on Wednesday, downing the University of Mary 5-2 in game one before snagging a 8-3 victory in game two.

UMD 5, Mary 2

Sophomore Ryan Cunningham gave up a run in the opening frame, but found his stride as he mowed down the Marauders through six innings. The left-hander tossed six innings while allowing just two runs and striking out five batters, earning his second win of the season (2-1).

Junior outfielder Brett Milazzo got the scoring started for UMD, scoring on a U-Mary error off the bat of freshman outfielder Drew Stewart to even the game at one. Junior Tyler Midas followed with a 2-RBI double to left field to put the Bulldogs up 3-1. UMD added two more third-inning runs with a double to the left center field gap by junior Colin Baumgard to cap off a five-run inning for the visitors, holding a 5-1 lead.

Mary would add one more run in the sixth inning to pull within three at 5-2, a score that proved to be the final result.

Junior Colton Sinning pitched a hitless seventh inning to get a save for UMD, striking out a batter in the process. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski and senior catcher Marco Lucarelli both recorded a pair of hits in 2-for-3 outings at the plate.

UMD 8, Mary 3

After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Bulldogs tacked on runs in each of the next five innings to propel past the Marauders 8-3. After notching one run in the second inning, Midas launched his third home run of the season to put UMD ahead 2-0 in the third inning. Stewart continued to be a spark for the Bulldog offense, as he singled to left field to drive in junior outfielder Brett Milazzo in the fifth inning. A single by sophomore catcher Ben Danielson shortly after pushed UMD to a 5-1 lead through five innings.

Baumgard was the starter for the Bulldogs on the mound, pitching five innings with three runs allowed. Freshmen Rece Dietrich and Evan Vick were the first to take on relief responsibilities -- each hurling an inning without allowing a hit. Juniors Jalen Busker and Alex Ferguson closed things out for UMD, also tossing an inning apiece without surrendering a hit.

Midas and senior outfielder Matt Vogt each racked up two hits and scored a run. Stewart concluded the game with one hit while driving in a team-high two RBI. Six other Bulldogs also recorded a hit, totaling 11 as a team compared to U-Mary's five.

UMD will be back in action next Wednesday as it hosts Southwest Minnesota State University at Wade Stadium for the 2017 home opener. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
