OH SWEEP MARY! UMD MAKES QUICK WORK OF MARAUDERS TO STAY UNBEATEN IN NSIC PLAY

The University of Minnesota Duluth kept its perfect Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record intact by taking down the University of Mary twice in Saturday afternoon doubleheader at James S. Malosky Stadium.

The Bulldogs rolled to a 11-0 five-inning victory in the opener and then completed the sweep with a 9-1 sixth-inning decision to move to 20-8 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC.

UMD, which has won 12 of its last 13 games, jumped on Mary (7-22 overall; 1-3 NSIC) early in the 11-1 triumph, striking for five runs in the first and adding three more in the second. Sophomore first baseman Kalynn Tilton went 2-for-2 and drove in six runs with three of those coming on a second-inning homer and and two more on a double the following inning. Junior second baseman Natalie Wright also homered and had two of UMD's 10 hits while senior Sam Hartmann (10-3) won her sixth straight decision after giving up just three hits and striking out five. She combined on the shutout with freshman Ashley Taipale, who pitched a hitless fifth inning.

In Game 2, UMD sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning, generated three runs and never looked back. They capped things off with a five-run fifth, highlighted by rookie third baseman Lauren Oberle's three-run double to centerfield. Wright and sophomore right fielder Sammi Sadler both went 3-for-3 and Oberle and junior shortstop Becky Smith each had three RBI.  Sophomore Valerie Hohol allowed four hits and one earned run in five inning of work to improve to 6-0 on the season. Junior centerfielder Hannah Schmoll became UMD's all-time stolen base leader in the first inning.  That gave the 2016 All-NSIC second team honoree 85 thefts for her career, one more than Michaela Goris registered between 2010-13

The Bulldogs will close out a six-game homestand Sunday (April 2) with a pair of NSIC bouts against Minot State University beginning at 12 noon.
