MILAZZO, LUCARELLI HELP BULLDOGS TO SPLIT WITH AUGUSTANA

The University of Minnesota Duluth kicked off a four-game series with Augustana (S.D.) University with one victory in two tries, moving its overall record to 16-16 while holding an 11-9 conference mark. The Viking pitching staff held down UMD 2-1 in game one before the Bulldogs turned the tables in game two for a 6-3 win.

AUGIE 2, UMD 1

It took Augustana a pair of extra innings to wind out ahead, but the Vikings eventually scratched across the winning run in the ninth inning on a walk-off squeeze play. The Bulldogs notched seven total hits, led by senior catcher Marco Lucarelli who went 2-for-4. Senior third baseman Kyle Hoffman posted UMD's only RBI, driving in junior Tyler Midas with a second-inning single.

Senior pitcher Marcus Frederickson coasted through seven innings of work, surrendering just one unearned run while sending down five Vikings on strikes. Senior Colton Sinning pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing just the one run on three hits.

UMD 6, AUGIE 3

The Bulldog bats woke up in the rematch, recording 11 hits in the seven-inning affair. Junior outfielder Brett Milazzo reached base all four times at the plate out of the leadoff spot, racking up a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI and run scored. Lucarelli tallied three more hits in four tries, scoring a pair of runs along with adding an RBI. Sophomore Ben Danielson also sported a perfect on base percentage, picking up two hits and two walks.

UMD notched a run in all but the fourth inning, beginning with an RBI Lucarelli single in the first frame. Danielson grabbed his RBI in the third inning on a double to center field, driving in Lucarelli. Two innings later, Midas would bring Lucarelli to score again on a double down the left field line.

Freshman southpaw Rece Dietrich started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching 4.1 innings with three earned runs. Freshman Travis Berg shut down the Vikings out of the bullpen, coasting through 2.2 innings with just two hits allowed.
