In its final home series of the 2017 season, the University of Minnesota Duluth was upended twice (5-0 and 8-1) by Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Bemidji State University Tuesday afternoon at Junction Avenue Field.
In the opener, Bemidji State's Jessica Yost kept the Bulldogs in check, surrendering just four hits and striking out 14 (a 2017 UMD single-game high) in the shutout triumph. Junior second baseman
Natalie Wright collected half of those hits, which included a leadoff double in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Brea Swint tossed 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief (giving up two hits and posting a pair of strikeouts) after coming in for sophomore starter
Valerie Hohol. Hohol suffered just her third defeat in 16 decisions this spring after allowing eight hits and five earned runs.
Bemidji State jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in its first at bats in the rematch before Wright launched her fifth homer of the year for UMD's lone run of the day. Wright again finished with a team-leading two hits to boost her Bulldog-best batting average to .365. The Bulldogs struck out 10 times while being swept in a NSIC doubleheader for just the second time this season.
Sam Hartmann (12-9), UMD's lone senior, was touched up for seven hits and four runs in three innings while taking the loss in her final home outing as a Bulldog
UMD (33-17 overall; 17-9 NSIC) will close out the 2017 regular season with four road games, starting with a pair against Augustana University this Saturday (April 29).
