BULLDOGS SET SINGLE-GAME STOLEN BASE RECORD, WIN BOTH AGAINST PEACOCKS

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team broke a nine year program record on Thursday night after it successfully stole eight bases in game-two against Upper Iowa University. The previous record, seven, was set back on April 11, 2009 against Northern State University.

Backed by solid pitching and speed on the base paths, the Bulldogs' bats came alive to help to beat the Peacocks 4-2 and then 7-3.

UMD climbed its way up to .500 on the season (10-10; 6-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) and is currently riding a four-game winning-streak.

The Bulldogs came into today with only 16 stolen bases on the season, and one game with three-or-more, coming against University of Findlay back on March 7. UMD would add three in the first game, and a program-best eight in the second. In the rematch, freshman second baseman Anders Brown also tied a school record with three stolen bases (accomplished by multiple players).

Senior southpaw Marcus Frederickson (W, 3-0) anchored UMD as he tossed the team's first complete game of the season in a pitching dual with Peacocks' Ryan Munoz, who also threw a complete game. Frederickson allowed just two earned runs with one walk while striking out four. A rough fourth inning allowed for the two UIU runs on four-straight hits and the only walk of the game for the lefty. Junior third baseman Ben Danielson swung the bat well, going 2-3 at the plate in game one with three RBI and a run. Danielson drove in the first run for the Bulldogs by singling in senior catcher Tyler Midas with two outs. He would also drive in the game-winning runs in the third with two-run double.

In game two, junior Alex Ferguson (W, 1-1) pitched arguably one of his best games of his Bulldog career. The right-hander tossed five strong innings while striking out a career-high eight batters, including back-to-back strikeouts - both swinging - with the bases loaded in the fifth to end the inning. While Ferguson dealt with the UIU offense, the UMD base runners kept its defense on its toes. The Bulldogs stole bases left and right. Brown (3), senior first baseman Colin Baumgard (2), Danielson (1), Midas (1) and sophomore catcher Reid Rubio (1) each garnered a stolen base in UMD's record-breaking day.

The Bulldogs will hang around in Mauston, Wis., for one more day as they go for two more against the Peacocks on Friday (March 30). First pitch in game one will be at 1 p.m. with game two starting at 3 p.m.
