The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team took three of four from Upper Iowa University after a split on a windy Friday afternoon in Mauston, Wis. with game one going UMD's way 6-4, and the rematching going in favor of UIU 15-4.
Game one
The Peacocks jumped on the board first after a single to left-center brought home a runner from second. UMD answered right back with two runs of its own after junior designated hitter Ben Danielson knocked in captains Brett Milazzo and Tyler Midas.
A solid pitching performance by sophomore Rece Dietrich on the mound blanked the Peacocks for the following four innings after a one-run first. Dietrich's one walk brought his season total to five in just 19.2 innings (2.34 per nine inn.). UIU plotted a comeback by garnering three in the sixth inning after five of the first six batters in the inning reached base with a hit before a 4-6-3 double play(2B-SS-1B) ended the attempt to climb back into the game.
Midas finished with a season-best four hits (4-4), and would collect nine hits down in Mauston, Wis. during the four game series, going 9-14 at the plate (.643 BA).
Game two
The rematch is certainly one the Bulldogs would like to have a do-over in. For the third time this season UMD was ten-runned. The Peacocks collected runs in six of the eight innings, including five in the final inning to put them up by 11. Both teams proved tough to strikeout, with only six batters going down looking (2) or swinging (4). UIU's Brett Fanning (W, 1-1) went the distance for his club, striking out three but walking four in his performance. Bulldogs' pitchers struggled on the mound, allowing 18 hits including seven extra-base hits (four doubles, one triple and two home runs).
UMD will have four days of rest before heading off to Marshall, Minn. to take on Southwest Minnesota State University on Wednesday, April 4. First pitch against the Mustangs (7-11; 2-6 NSIC) will be at 1:30 p.m., and game two at 3:30 p.m. SMSU has two players, Nathan Kuhn and Shane Sellner, ranked in the top-10 in the NSIC in On-Base Percentage.
