BULLDOGS WRANGLE IN MUSTANGS TWICE ON THURSDAY

Over the last nine days the University of Minnesota Duluth has steamrolled through Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and it did so once again in Wakefield, Neb., on Thursday.

The Bulldogs corralled Southwest Minnesota State University in today's double header matchup. UMD defeated the Mustangs 13-10 in the opener and then toppled them 8-5. The Bulldogs, who have dispatched SMSU with sweeps in each of the last three double header showdowns going back to 2016, have won seven of their last eight contests to crawl back above the .500-mark on the season.

Senior catcher Tyler Midas came up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in game one. Midas went 3-for-4 with four RBI including a three-run homer to right in the second inning. He was one of three Bulldogs to register multiple hits. Senior outfielder Brett Milazzo and freshman outfielder Henry George each posted a pair of hits and junior first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski smacked in two RBI. In total, UMD had nine players tally a hit in the game. Senior southpaw Jalen Busker took his third win of the season, going 5.1 strong innings with a season-high six punch outs.

The Mustangs made a deep run in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting. They scored seven times before sophomore pitcher Evan Vick came in to dispose of the threat.

SMSU grabbed the early 2-0 advantage in the first but senior right-hander Colin Baumgard slammed the door shut to allow his offense to take over. The Bulldogs scored eight runs between the third and sixth innings. They tied it in the third and junior shortstop Eric Yachinich snatched the lead on an RBI bases loaded walk in the fourth. UMD tripled its lead in the fifth after junior third baseman Ben Danielson stole home on a double steal with Drew Stewart. The sophomore outfielder scored two batters later on an infield single by freshman infielder Anders Brown.

Sophomore outfielder Chris Saltzmann gave UMD the decisive runs it would need when he went yard in the sixth to push the lead to 7-2. The Bulldogs tacked on one more before the Mustangs made a push in the eighth. Junior Alex Ferguson and senior Marcus Frederickson combined to pitch a scoreless ninth frame to seal the sweep.

UMD (13-11; 9-3 NSIC) will take on Minnesota State University Mankato Saturday, April 7 at Wade Stadium. The Mavericks (19-7; 14-3 NSIC) rolled over Concordia University, St. Paul twice on Thursday. Opening pitch of the two-game set will start at 12:00 p.m.
