As the 2018 baseball season continues on, so does the crazy weather. The University of Minnesota Duluth and Minot State University relocated its series from Minot, N.D., this weekend to Watford City, N.D. The Bulldogs and Beavers battled out a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference bouts Sunday afternoon as the two teams battle for a top-spot as the season heads down the final stretch.
UMD halted MSU's 11 game win streak with a 5-3 win in game one, but were unable to keep the momentum rolling as the team dropped the rematch 13-9.
Bulldogs' (15-15; 11-7 NSIC) ace Marcus Frederickson took to the mound for his seventh start of the season in game one on the afternoon. The southpaw tossed just three innings, but allowed just one hit and no walks while striking out five. Frederickson struck out the side (all swinging) in the bottom of the second inning for the first time since April 11, 2017 against St. Cloud State University in the bottom of the eighth - spanning 65.1 innings. (He struck out all four batters he faced that day.)
Freshman Thomas Bruchu (S, 2) came in to strike out the side to end game one. In his last three relief appearances, Bruchu has thrown four innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk, and has struck out five.
Freshman outfielder Henry George once again showed his ability to get on base, going 4-7 at the plate on the day with three runs, two RBI's and one walk (no strikeouts). George clubbed three singles and a double in the doubleheader.
Bases loaded? That's no problem for junior shortstop Eric Yachinich. Yachinich launched a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning in game two, his second home run of the day (hitting a lead-off homer in the second inning).
The Bulldogs and Beavers will slug it out with just one game tomorrow (April 16) at 12 noon in Watford City, N.D.
With eight of its last 10 games cancelled, Winona State University remains tied for fifth in the NSIC with UMD, both with a conference record of 11-7.
