BULLDOGS FALL TO MINOT STATE IN SERIES FINALE

Decent weather, ugly loss.

The University of Minnesota Duluth suffered a 27-12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball defeat at the hands of Minot State University Monday afternoon.

The Beavers (18-11 overall; 9-8 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) took two of three from the Bulldogs (15-16; 11-8 NSIC) in the series.

With four home runs today, the seven total by MSU is the most in a series given up by UMD pitchers since MSU hit seven back on April 30 and May 1, 2016 in four games. The four homers are also the most in a single game since Pittsburg State University connected for four back on Feb. 20, 2016.

The Bulldogs jumped on the board in the top of the first as freshman outfielder Henry George crossed the plate on a double play. What followed was a disaster. MSU tallied seven runs in both the first and second innings. It's the fifth time this season in which the Bulldogs have allowed seven runs or more in a single inning. The 14 runs were scored on nine hits, four walks and three errors. UMD chipped away at the lead, collecting one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the sixth. But it wouldn't be nearly enough as the Beavers poured on 10 more on six hits and four errors in the bottom of the sixth to take a 27-9 lead. UMD would tack on three more in the final inning on three straight hits, but would ultimately fall by 15. The 27 runs allowed are the most since March 15, 2009 against Southwest Minnesota State University when they lost 34-1.

In the top of the second, designated hitter Chris Saltzmann launched his third home run of the season.

UMD will play Concordia University-St. Paul on Wednesday, April 18 at 1:30 p.m., in St. Paul. The Bulldogs have won six of their last eight assignments against the Golden Bears.
