The University of Minnesota Duluth found it extremely tough to come by runs in its series with No. 3 Augustana University. The Bulldogs (15-19; 11-12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were shutout in three of the four games in the series after losing game one 1-0 and game two 10-2 to the Vikings (36-2; 22-2 NSIC) on Monday.
AU brought one across in the sixth inning after Carter Wevik singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by senior catcher Tyler Midas, and scored on a wild pitch. That's all they would need as the Bulldogs were shutout for the third time in a row. Its the 13th time this season - and fourth in a row - the Vikings pitching staff has shutout its opponents. The closest the UMD came to scoring in game one was sophomore first baseman Alex Welder blasting a ball that came up just a few feet short of going over the fence in left during the second inning.
The Bulldogs mustered just 3 hits en route to a 10-2 loss in the rematch. AU collected 10 runs on 12 hits for their 12th straight win. After 30 scoreless innings, sophomore shortstop Chase Thomas singled up the middle to bring in senior Colin Baumgard for the first run of the series. Outfielder Drew Stewart followed up Thomas by driving in freshman catcher Dayo Lawal in a double-play.
UMD will play Winona State University on Wednesday, April 25 at 1:30 in a doubleheader. Â
UMD will take on Northern State University (13-15; 6-10 NSIC) on Saturday, April 28 in a pair of NSIC bouts at 4 p.m. The Wolves' Jack Schmidt ranks second in the NSIC with a .411 batting average, and leads his team in hit (40), runs (26), and home runs (6).
