BULLDOG BATS GO QUIET AS WSU SWEEPS TWINBILL

The injury-plagued University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs dropped both ends of their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to Winona State University Thursday afternoon at Wade Stadium, falling 4-2 and 9-5

In game one, UMD (15-22; 11-14 NSIC) thwarted a first-inning attack by WSU, as the first two batters reached but were doubled up at third and second. Also in the first, a single followed by a stolen base put senior right fielder put Brett Milazzo on second base. Sophomore center fielder Drew Stewart single brought the speedy captain home for the first run of the game. The Warriors took advantage of several mistakes by the Bulldogs in the third as three runners crossed the plate to take a 3-1 lead. WSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and that's all it would need as it won game one 4-2.

To begin the second game, three straight Warriors walked into the batter's box, and walked right on down to first base. UMD avoided a what could have been a catastrophic start to the game by quickly getting two outs, but ultimately allowed a bases-loaded, two-out single up the middle to drive in two. A fly-out to Milazzo brought the inning to an end, with the Bulldogs in the hole 2-0. WSU tacked on seven more throughout the innings, taking a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Bulldogs strung some hits together and took advantage on the Warriors in the ninth to add four runs, but fell short in a 9-5 loss.

Freshman catcher Dayo Lawal went 3-for-4 at the plate today - all singles - with a run. After starting the season 0-for-8 with five strikeouts, Lawal has gone 7-for-9 (.777) with just one strikeout since.

UMD will head to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Northern State University (14-16; 7-11 NSIC) on Saturday, April 28 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., and again on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
