Senior forward
Natalie St. Martin scored her first goal of the season and senior goalkeeper
Sisley Ng pitched her second consecutive shutout as the University of Minnesota Duluth stunned Augustana University at Morstad Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings (6-2-1; 5-1 NSIC) entered today tied for first with Bemidji State University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. It wasn't the first time the Bulldogs (3-5-1; 2-3-1 NSIC) shocked Augustana as an underdog at its place. UMD took down the second-seeded Vikings in the 2014 conference tournament.
St. Martin had been quiet in the goal-scoring department for the first eight matches but found the right time to boot in her first goal of 2018. The Vikings partially cleared a UMD corner kick early in the second half but junior defender
Mikayla Iaquinto got position on the near side and sent the ball back in the scrum. The ball went underneath a Bulldog and a Viking player right to an open St. Martin. The Dellwood, Minn., native had her first attempt saved by Augustana keeper Claudia Pueschner but St. Martin pushed in the rebound to give the Bulldogs the lead in the 67th minute.
Ng did her part as well. The White Bear Lake, Minn., native stopped all seven shots. Ng stole the match for the Bulldogs as she made three diving saves and downright denied Morgan Keirstead one-on-one in the 63rd minute. Four minutes later, Ng robbed Payton Stenzel from point-blank range. The Vikings did all they could to force their fourth straight overtime match but UMD wasn't having it.
For the match, the Bulldogs registered 17 shots with 13 going on goal. the 13 shots on goal was the second highest mark of the season behind the 15 they put on Minnesota Crookston. Augustana attempted 19 shots and had eight more corners than UMD.
The Bulldogs head to Wayne, Neb., to take on Wayne State College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
