The University of Minnesota Duluth took on No. 6 ranked Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night.The Bulldogs came out on top, beating the Golden Bears in four sets (3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-23)) and improving to 22-3 overall (15-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) while CSP drops to 20-5 overall (14-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference).
UMD would finish the evening swinging at a .292 clip, dropping 10 team blocks and digging 71. CSP would swing at a .175 clip, blocking 11 and digging 70.
The first set saw action right off the get go, with the Bulldogs scoring the first point, then the Golden Bears would strike three straight. The teams would trade points, with neither team scoring more than a single point until UMD would strike six straight points, taking a 10-6 lead. CSP would score one, then the Bulldogs would drop two, with the Golden Bears matching with two of their own. The teams would again trade points, neither team dropping more than two points their way. CSP would chip their way back, but not before UMD would be able to close out the set at 25-22.
The second saw the Golden Bears dropping the first two points before the Bulldogs would put down one. Neither squad wanted to give way to the other, with the teams not scoring more than two before CSP would put up four straight and take a 15-10 lead in the set. Neither team would put down more than two again until the Golden Bears would put three down, taking a 21-13 lead. The Bulldogs would attempt to chip their way back into the set, but were unable to make their back, dropping the set 17-25.
The third would see the Bulldogs gain momentum right out the gate, dropping three straight before CSP would take one. UMD would go on a 5-1 run before the Golden Bears floored four to make their way back. The Bulldogs would keep their lead at two before dropping in four straight and running away with the set. UMD kept the pressure on, not allowing the Golden Bears any chances for momentum. CSP was unable to floor more than two straight for the rest of the set, with the Bulldogs running away with the set, 25-16.
In the final set, UMD would keep the momentum flowing into the final set and start off on a 3-1 run. CSP battled their way back into the set, dropping three straight and not allowing the Bulldogs to score more than two straight until UMD found three straight points and took an 11-8 lead. the Golden Bears would drop four of their own and take the lead. UMD would battle their way back, eventually flooring three straight and retaking the lead, 23-20. The Bulldogs wouldn't let CSP back in, taking it and running with it to finish the set, 25-23.
Redshirt freshman setter
Madison Gordon would finish with three assists and 16 digs on the day. Sophomore outside hitter
Meredith Sutton would drop 11 on the day, grabbing two digs and a block as well. Sophomore middle blocker
Summer Ballard would floor five of her own, stuffing four balls back into the CSP court-side. Junior outside hitter
Kate Berg would drop 17 kills, grabbing two assists, six digs 16 digs and seven blocks on the day (two solo, five assists). Senior defensive specialist
Keena Seiffert would dig 16 on the day, grabbing two assists as well. Senior setter
Emily Balts would dish 37 assist, getting four kills and seven digs. Senior right side hitter
Hanna Meyer would floor six in the win, swinging at a .333 clip and blocking two. Senior middle blocker
Abby Thor would hammer nine home on the day, grabbing a dig and one block.
The Bulldogs take to the court again tomorrow afternoon against Minnesota State at 2 PM. It will be UMD's final home match, as well as the Bulldog's senior day.
