The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team fell to #2 Northern State University 83-72 in the Bulldogs' first road test of the season. UMD now sits at 2-4 (1-4Â NSIC)Â on the 2020-21 campaign.Â
UMD struggled from the field, shooting 26-66 (39.4%) from the field and 7-24 (29.2%) from beyond the arc. Northern State would shoot 36-65 (55.4) from the field and 6-22 (27.3%) from beyond the arc for the game. The Bulldogs recorded 37 rebounds on the glass but struggled to contain the Wolves inside the paint, leading to them scoring 58 of their 83 points from in close. UMD would convert 14 second chance points compared to Northern State's nine. UMD would only commit nine turnovers compared to Northern State's 16.Â
Freshman forward Austin Andrews would lead UMD with 20 points, 13 rebounds and minutes played with 38:51. Andrews would also record two assists. This is the second double-double of the season for the Eden Prairie native. Two other Bulldogs would finish in double figures in the points column. Redshirt sophomore guard Drew Blair would finish the night with 15 points, shooting 5-15 from the field and only 1-7 from beyond the arc. Blair also grabbed four rebounds, lead UMD with three assists and played 36:21. Sophomore guard Jack Middleton also recorded 15 points, going 5-10 shooting from the field and 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Middleton also grabbed six rebounds, tallied two assists and played 31:19. Â
'We struggled out of the gate tonight," said head coach Justin Wieck. "Our guys continued to battle and gained some footing in the second half. We are so young and this experience will help us moving forward. We need to be much better tomorrow if we want to compete with the #2 team in the country."Â
The Bulldogs will look to rebound from tonight's loss tomorrow at 4:00 PM in Aberdeen as UMD and the Wolves battle again.Â
