BULLDOGS WIN ON SENIOR NIGHT WITH GOAL FROM TOBIAS

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer program picked up its third win of the year with a 1-0 victory over MSU-Moorhead Friday evening at Malosky Stadium.

The lone goal of the evening came at the 66:57 mark of the game, when Eliana Marciano passed the ball to Anna Tobias. Her initial shot was blocked when the Dragons goalkeeper Kayleigh Sedlacek came out of the net to stop the ball, but it popped out of the keeper's hands and Tobias was able to get the rebound in the back of the net. This was Tobias' third goal of the year; she now leads the team in scoring. Jackie Jares and Emilia McGiffert are tied for second with two goals apiece.

The Bulldogs controlled possession from the start, ending the first half with 59% possession and finishing the game with 57% possession total. 28% of the game was spent inside the Dragons' box.

UMD had 15 total shots to Moorhead's two, with seven of those shots from the Bulldogs going on frame. Julia Osborne led the team with four shots in tonight's game, a season-high for her. Three of those shots were on target. Tori Thorson, Anna Tobias, and Nora Griffin-Wiesner all had two shots, while Jackie Jares, Sarah Stange, Kirsten Dagel, Daisy Miller, and Erin Walpole added one apiece.

Sophia Grenz made one save during the game, pushing her overall season save percentage to .761.

Head Coach Greg Cane was impressed by the perseverance he saw from his team tonight: "It wasn't unlike a lot of other games we've had at home this year, where we were creating and getting chances but not scoring. Today was the same, and Moorhead had a lot to do with that--and we just had to persevere. Sometimes it takes an exceptional play and I thought it was a good delivery from Eliana onto Anna who dealt with it really well. It's good to win at home on Senior Day.

The team celebrated its eight 2021 seniors with a halftime ceremony: Sophia Grenz, Shannon King, Julia Osborne, Ebelin Morales Benites, Mandy Conkel, Kirsten Dagel, Becca Osborne, and Holly Kaboord. "We're really noticed when our seniors haven't been in the lineup this year," said Cane. "That's been pretty notable for us. When they aren't available, we're a different team, and that speaks to their quality and what they do for the team."

"People like Holly and Julia have played out of position a lot this year because of the need for that--Shannon has been playing out of position in a variety of positions this year. Filling in for injured players has been pretty common for those seniors this year and they've stepped up really well. Even Becca, not playing but being for the team and with the team all the time, just showing really good dedication and doing what the team needs. They deserve it tonight."

The team will head to Aberdeen, S.D., on Sunday for a 1:00pm matchup with Northern State in their penultimate game of the year.
